Hello again I've encountered two niggling problems with Vista Ultimate 64bit;

1) In the switch, the old dear has lost most of her contacts and emails from Outlook Express. Vista had shunted 'all' files and folders into a couple of folders designated 'windows.old' and 'windows.old000'. Would anyone know where to find the contacts and emails stored on the computer within an XP style folder setup?

2)All the .doc and .docx files I transferred from the 'windows.old' folder to my new documents folder are not being registered by WINWORD.exe. I've tried using 'Open with...' and the only way to currently open the files is to open Word first. Anyone have any ideas on this as well? Im using Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007.

I'll submit any other information if it's needed, and as always, karma to those who can sucessfully help

For the the Word files(doc/docx) you should be able to right click on the choose "open with", "choose default program", the browse to where Word is installed (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\winword.exe). Make sure "always use this program...." is checked.

Thats the problem, I've tried that, but it recommends Media Center, and gives Internet Explorer, Notepad, Wordpad, Photoviewer, Calendar and Paint as others to use. I found Winword.exe but it doesn't come up as an option. Aggravating

Over the top of, yes. I wasn't keen on spending an age redownloading everything I had forgotten to backup.

Over the top of, yes. I wasn't keen on spending an age redownloading everything I had forgotten to backup.
this is why you have that problem, you'll have to reinstall all of your programs, including Word... this is why your computer doesn't recognize those documents.  when you reinstall windows, it also re-creates the registry.  When this happens, all of the proviously installed software needs to be reinstalled so it can put its necessary entries in the registry as well.  This is why you should always do a clean install, because you will end up wasting alot of space with files and programs that are no longer properly installed and working.  If you afraid of losing things, you should create a disk image, as well as a backup of your data.  This way, if you forget something, you can pull it from the disk image.

that also is because reinstalling windows creates a new user profile.  all of your mail was part of your previous profile.  see if there is a way to do an import in your mail app, then browse to your old profile to find your mail. 

you really should do a clean install though, it's just not worth the aggravation to deal with the situation you are in now.

The problem is that there are no registry entries. The registry is brand new, anything that you had installed previously is no longer "installed" (in the registry).
