I never did understand the point of wired routers, but then again all our modems are modem/routers.
Because wireless sucks.
My point is that routers are essentially switches here.

And QFT.

sounds like you need to setup a static IP address for your computer and probably for your xbox 360 too if thats possible.

I had a similiar problem and settings up the static Ip address fixed it

or.... (I only skimmed answers on the first page, so it might be there)

Did you plug in the modem? Both power and cable jack? I know it sounds retarded, but sometimes people just overlook things.....

Sorry prototype... but this won't fix the issue. The router he has got supports DHCP, and so will provide the computers with an IP address. At most he should restart the machines to clear any IP conflicts....

this

the problem is not with the router, the problem is the router can't log into your internet because you haven't told it how

get the password and put the correct internet settings in and it will work
But wouldn't it be his modem that needs to authenticate? If the modem already connects, then it's not an authentication problem.
The way I understood it, used used to be

Internet -> Modem -> PC

and its now...

Internet -> Router with Modem -> Internal Network
I think it's:
Internet -> Modem -> Router -> Internal Network
But I could be wrong.

my connection is like this,

router to modem(wan port) and then computer/xbox to the 1/2/3/4 ports on router via ethernet

router connects to wan port on the modem?

I think he meant that the modem connects to the WAN port on the router.
