  • Laptop really, really, REALLY slow starting up/shutting down.

I have a year-old laptop with Windows Vista Business on it.  Whenever I shut down, it takes over 10 minutes of the "shutting down" screen (it actually takes way longer, but I usually cut the power at the point).  Whenever I start up again, it takes around six minutes to get to the desktop, then another 2 or 3 minutes before it's actually usuable.

I ran a CHKDSK with the default settings (Automatically fix file system errors), and nothing came up.

Any suggestions as to what might be wrong/be done to make it faster?

Specs:
Brand:  Lenovo T61
CPU:  T7500 2.20 GHz
GPU:  Quadro 140M
RAM:  2 GB
OS:  Windows Vista Business SP1
Anti-virus:  Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
Lenovo/IBM utilities running: Fingerprint Reader, Shock detector, Password Manager, Touchpad manager

EDIT: No, it used to shut down under 2 minutes.  I can't reformat (or at least, I'd do it as a last resort) because retards over at Lenovo don't give you a recovery CD, only a recovery "partition" that's notoriously unpredictable.

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

spyware/adware check?  first thing to do when you notice things are slow.

Just reformat. If you don't trust the recovery partition, get your hands on a legal or illegal Windows disc. No Windows installation, especially Vista, will perform well after a year. Even more so on a laptop, getting turned on/off/hibernate/sleep a lot more.

Just do it, you aren't gonna get full performance out of that Windows install ever again.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I might as well reformat, but I need to find the product key for my anti-virus before I can do that.

Don't get too hung up on that unless you're sure it's on your computer. It ought to be in paperwork somewhere.

If you're behind a router (which you ought to be) and use a free AV (AVG among others) program, you're fine until you can find that slip of paper.

or sooner, I like 4 months.  as for AV, just use the free version of Avast.

go into 'my computer' and if you have any shared or network drives - disconnect them.  those things really bog windows down on startup/shutdown.

turn off the hardware switch for your wireless card (if you have one) and see if the problem goes away... this will at least point you in the direction of the root cause.  but if you cba to troubleshoot,
