netgear and cisco (linksys) make the best hardware, imo.  i've used both in home and work environments for many years with no problems...  finding a good price on them is whole 'nother ball game

i've personally used this router, and my buddy has the desktop card here... no complaints about either.  there are some harsh newegg reviews though, so maybe some others will weigh in with their recommendations...

router

card

One question: why wireless on a desktop?

Wireless N is the way to go if you're going to be gaming. Not sure as to which card you should get, but that router is nice.

Actually no, if the router is a long distance away then you should use wired. You really want to advocate wireless because it has a greater distance possibility?

Your problem can't be distance, it must be routing the cables. I suggest getting creative with the wiring.

or not

the router is one room and I'm not about to drill holes and feed wires around ... so its wireless

You could always buy a 50 FT LAN cord, run it on you're ceiling, not many people look up there.

But as for the router, N > G.

My router/switch is in the living room where as my computer is in my room. I've got a 50M cable going around the living room, through the hall and in to my room and I can hide it (for the most part) in between the carpet and the bottom of the wall.

And, like I said, it's not distance. I don't mean to make this point in contradiction, but it would be worth your time to carefully look around for an acceptable way to route the cable. A good router and card can hit $100 easily. If the shortest route is over 100M though, wireless through the wall is the way to go.

Lol assumption is lol

Nothing wrong with our D link.

Had a DIR-624 G

Now have a DIR-625 N

Just installed a DIR-628 for a client, never had any problems with any of them. All using D Link Adapters as well.

fine ........... heres the long story ........... I just moved into my brand new off frame mod home, I have it setting on a full size basement that later on I will finish and put in a office for me ( that has all ready been outfitted with ethernet cable )
for the time being I have my desktop tucked away into the corner of my living room, I do not want to drill any holes to put in cords
