K so i built a new computer recently... and i still have a extra $250-300 (AUD)  lying around that i feel like spending..

so if u guys could suggest what sound card is best (or best price/performance ratio)..

for info i have a P5Q-Pro motherboard and Logitech X-540 5.1 speakers.

also i live in australia so dont bother linking to newegg etc... i would like to order from www.itsdirect.com.au because i got my computer form there and they've been really good... but i will consider any other aus site.

oh and preferably just PCI because i would like to have my 2nd PCIe slot for another 4870 when i feel like it.

Ive been looking at http://itsdirect.com.au/com_products.ph … Sound_Card
as an option. is this good value etc should i go for something different.

Side note: Alot of cards ive seen say PCI express but in the picture it looks like a PCI.... why is that?

Thanks.

You'll definitely like that card, Myself (And most of the forum tbh) have the older PCI version of this card. Unbelievable sound.

Ok cool.... but is it a PCIe card? because the picture shows PCI.... and i dont want to use my 2nd PCIe slot.

Xonar.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

On the page you linked to, that picture is of a card that uses a PCIe x1 slot.

sooo will that go into the red circled slots or the blue circled slots (sorry for being a noob haha. never had to deal with anything PCIe except video cards)

It can go in the blue circled ones, or the long blue/long black ones.

No, the one with the case has in-built "X-RAM", which is supposed to make it faster.

I have no idea.  I don't even use a sound card.

See my edit in previous post.  They're not even completely the same card (specs are almost identical though).

Dude, I put one of them into a build I did for a mate.

Dunno which one (whether it was with/without the XRAM).

Sry, shoulda looked at pics before I posted - it was the one with a casing, so the one with XRAM.

It sounds f'ing awesome.

And his PC (though, it was v.high spec) has no problems running crysis/bf2/anything with maxed-out sound wizardry.

awesome... so far im looking at the cheaper one... because i cant see how there can be that much difference between the two... either way it will still be alot better than onboard sound.

Well, I'm only going on how that compare to his Q9650, 4GB Reaper DDR3, 3xGTX280, but I'd say either sound card will almost certainly be fine.

It all comes down to "Do you want to pay an extra $100 for sound that's just that little bit better and maybe 5-10% more FPS?"

well, no way of knowing how complete that list is, it's the official site, so... *shrug*

don't blame me if you get the cheaper one and it's shit, but I'd go for the cheaper unless I had money to burn.

lol i wouldnt blame anyone... because theres no way it can be worse than onboard sound... and considering there are $30 soundcards on the website... i'd say it couldnt be to bad.

Yeah, and I'm just covering my ass 'cos I've never done a side-by-side comparison of the two versions, so really have no idea what difference the X-RAM makes.
