OK, I searched teamspeak on the forums...didn't really get what I want.  Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm gonna go to best buy tomorrow and get a mic for the computer (just a little logitec one or something probably), do I need anything else for me to talk in battlefield 2?  People keep on talking about xfire or teamspeak, do I need to download anything or can I just hook up the mix and be done with it and people will hear me?  Thanks.

Teamspeak is a program that lets you talk to eachother via microphones using servers/channels etc. much like IRC. While I think ventrillo is a lot better, Teamspeak seems to be more friendly to people who cant afford to host their own servers.

Important note: You need a server to connect to with a Teamspeak server hosted on it. While you can do this yourself, it will negatively impact game performance whilst running with other plays on it. Most clans will have a dedicated server setup either privately, or a channel on a larger network like that of a gaming/server network (Internode for example).

All you need is a cheapy little microphone that is reasonable clear (I use a crappy Verbatim one from the local electronics store, though I'd recommend Logitech). Configure your microphone in windows by following the list of procedures below.

Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > "Audio" Tab > Select "Volume" under the sound recording section, and adjust "Microphone" volume to full. If theres an advanced button under the Microphone volume, which there should be, click it, and be sure to select Microphone Boost as on.

In teamspeak, go to Options > Input/Output Sound settings and please bind a button to Talk-to-speak. This way, you won't be annoying as all hell, becuase background speech and desk noise wont set off your microphone; instead you simply have to hold down the selected button to talk just like a Handheld Walky-Talkie.

Hopefully that covers it.

If you are talking about general voice comms in game, then BF2 has built in VOIP. Just use the V and B keys in a "press-to-talk" manner.

Teamspeak is what you use if you have a known group of friends who all connect to the Teamspeak server you setup independantly of BF2. Teamspeak has nothing to do with BF2 at all, it's just a handy way to create a conference call with a group of people and you can use it for any game, or even as a cheap party-line VOIP solution for friends and family. You can also use one of the many free Teamspeak servers on the net that you will find in the built in directory when you install the client.

And if you are lucky you won't have the same issues I have with my onboard sound card where BF2 voip works for the first couple of minutes of play and then mysteriously stops for no aparrent reason.

Chatting with microphones while using speakers should be considered illegal in all countries.

This was the only topic that comes up under teamspeak in the search option.

Excellent information junkpile, stupid question though, do I open teamspeak then just join a server?

How do I tell which servers have teamspeak?

Thanks mate!

Thanks Boris, I'll try not to use too much punctuation in future.

So can I tell through the bf2 serverlist which ones have teamspeak? Or should I use the all-seeing eye?

I don't quite get it.

VoIP is the Battlefield 2 voice communication application/utility that runs as a part of battlefield 2 and is entirely in-game based.

Teamspeak is a completely unrelated voice communication application that is very popular, and is often used for simply chatting online (Much like the popular "Skype" for webcam communication). Whilst a lot of the bigger communities run their own dedicated Teamspeak servers for anyone to join (and clans can often gain permission to create their own channel), Teamspeak server details are often kept private until you join a clan/become friends with them.

For those clans that do currently run their own dedicated Teamspeak servers, I highly recommend you check out an alternative voice communication application called Ventrilo. In my personal opinion, it's a lot easier to use, much clearer (depending on codec obviously), and overall, a lot more user friendly. The main thing Ventrilo has over TS is the ability to amplify and adjust microphone input volume WITH the windows sound options, whereas TS is entirely dependant on the windows utility for input controls.
