Best video codec?

Okay, so.

I've been recording demos of TF2 and converting them into Xvid using VirtualDub, but later found out they lag like shit in Premiere.
So I decided to save them with one of the MPEG codecs, but now the videos have major artifacting and freezes. I also deleted the Xvid ones, thinking the new ones would work...

So seeing as I'll have to damn well re-record all the demos...what's the best codec for video editing?

I haven't had any problems with Microsoft DV Avi (I'm pretty sure that's what it's called). Although they are a big large, size-wise.

And apparently mpeg4 is supposed to have pretty good quality and small file size (best for using with YouTube).

Well from personal experince. This is what I do. I use Fraps to record to raw .avi then I used DivX HD codecs to rendering at 1280x720 for youtube. I have a 6min HD video that is only 330MBs. BTW youtube allows 1GB uploads but, it takes a long time to upload. I also use Vegas 8.0 to do everything in.

I render at...
1280x720
30FPS
10,000Kbps

And you get this...

Sorry if this is not exactly what your looking for but its how I do things.

PS. That video is also only at 4500-5000Kbps while I now render at 10,000. Also youtube can now video HD videos in a larger screen. 0_o

Pardon my potential idiocy, I haven't touched even VirtualDub in a long time, but couldn't you save it as uncompressed?

I'm not sure how well this would trade off, the editor would not have to encode/decode the video but it may take up shit tons more RAM and completely negate the effect.

Experiment time?

Still working on that part. Its a learning experince for me. I just really started do this about a month ago. I plan on pick up a quad core for just this stuff.

Edit: I'll make another video tomorrow night and try to remove that. It has been bothering me for a while. I'll probably do another Fallout 3 video.

x264 isn't a codec (nor is mkv, it's a matroska video wrapper - which is way better than the default mp4 wrapper (mainly because you can use AC3 and AAC audio)). It's an encoder for H.264. A damn good one, best one I know of. But for best results implementing the full AVC/H.264 feature set you can create a custom encoder to use more features. They made me do it at uni (not to use more features, I was trying to improve streaming playback over very low QoS networks) and it was remarkably satisfying, yet obscenely difficult. How hard it would be to go beyond what has been done in currently available software encoders, I do not know. Very hard, I would assume.
