I've grown tired to my old Nokia and it's propertiary headphones, and I have some cash to spare, so I'm thinking of getting something that would give me a bit more oomph than a phone.

I was thinking about the Sansa e2*0, but they're impossible to get your hands on nowmore

So, if you have some good tips, share. Rules are:

1 - No iPods. Not the classic, not the Touch, not the Nano. No matter what, they are out of the question.
2 - Storage is of no matter. 2GB and up will suffice. More is always better, but I don't need a fucktonne.
3 - Screen is of no matter. I want a music player, not a toy.
4 - Interface is of no matter. As long as it has play, pause and next track, I'm good.
5 - Sound quality does matter. I want something that sounds good. Real good.
6 - Must do OGG, FLAC and AAC.
7 - Needs to be open. I don't want to be forced to use some faggy program to put files on it.
8 - No iPods. Seriously.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I'm lovin my Samsung YP-T10, they're discontinued but the YP-P2's have larger touchscreens. Not 100% sure but I think they do OGG and FLAC.

Like every other one of these threads, I have to mention Cowon.

My experience is with a D2, though most of these can be generalizations of all Cowon players.

1.) Great sound quality. Superior to everything mentioned, Zunes/iPods (laughable)/etc. Can't speak for it versus Sansa's though.
2.) Supports OGG/FLAC, but not AAC. I couldn't say why, though I'd advise using FLAC anyways.
3.) It satisfies most that you casually mentioned. 2-4-8-16GB flash (SD expandable), UI has some quirks but is mostly intuitive.

Edit: Just realized something. I listed 32GB for some reason but the D2 only comes up to 16GB flash. Cowon has other hard drive players that go up to 60GB I think. For other readers, if you really need more space, Archos and Wolverine make hard drive players at 250GB.

I'm with Defiance on this matter.

I've been using a Cowon iAudio X5 for the last 2 years and I still love that thing.

It plays pretty much every audio format you throw at it (yes, even .flac), the sound quality is above everything I've ever heard on a portable audio player (with decent headphones that is). It has a 30GB HD and one of my favourite features is that you don't need any program to get music on it (iTunes comes to mind). It all works with simple drag & drop.

The problem is that this thing is a rather old model by now, so it might be hard to get one.

They do indeed. I'm gonna take a look around now that I'm for once on the mainland, and things are like 50% cheaper.

Christmas shopping? In MY town? I saw some Åländare yesterday and figured they've come for the wider range of choice, not the price.

Do you come over by ship, btw?

Oh, and on topic: IMO you should look into getting a Creative Zen XiFi + some Koss plugs.
I need around tree fiddy.

Wanna meet up for buttsecks?

Because of a couple of things:

1. iTunes. Just no.
2. Sound. Compared a nano to my phone, and there is hardly any difference.
3. Apple. I'm not that gay.
And so on.
