With all the accidential gun shootings kids have now adays, when and how should you introduce guns?  How do you teach them they are not toys?

Teach them from an early age, but for gods sake don't teach them how to load and fire. And never show them where the ammo and gun is kept or where the key is.

The only thing you want to teach your kid about guns is gun safety.

When you need an accomplice for a murder/heist/film etc.

ie 3.  No one expects a 3 year old to be able to handle a gun, let alone hold up a bank.

Don't let them near guns/don't have guns?

Yes, I'm Canadian and not American so you're "we have right to bear arms blah blah" doesn't really mean much to me...

With me nephews, I've aproached the situation carefully.  when they were really young, 4 or 5, and were curious about firearms, I'd let them look at and handle  any gun they wanted, it wasn't even about safety or education, but about supervised curiousity.  I took away all the mystery.  As they've gotten older they've progressed to learning safe handling and use and the 4 rules.  they're shooting air rifles and .22s.  eventually they'll move up to .223 rifles and 9mm handguns, and so on.

Mate she could track down an ex through a heavily wooded forest in the dead of night, skin him, eat his heart and make it all look like a wild animal attack before covering her own tracks, all before the sun comes up.

If she wants a date, you don't refuse one.

Yup.

Some dad thinks it's cool that his 11 y/o daughter can strip and rebuild a weapon. Fuck sake.

Depends on how mentally mature you think your kids are.

I would show guns to my kid around the age of 5. Just tell them the basic principles and uses. But defiantly teach them about safety and how to handle guns properly and safely. Soon or later they are going to get their hands on a gun be it at your house or a friends.

Would you have your child prepared incase he/she came across a gun at a friends house?

Or

Have your child at a friends house with no knowledge what so ever of guns and what they can do?

Of all the life skills and wisdom you should impart to your young progeny, how to quickly field strip a military rifle is not one of them...

What's the point? The only situation that would 'need' that skill would be in the military, in which case they train you anyway- you know, at a more appropriate age.

I think gun safety should be promoted, definitely. How to use a gun and how to shoot... er, bit of a hard one. Perhaps when they're old enough to legally own and shoot a gun in their State, then would be a good time to introduce them to guns. I don't see a lot of point in teaching an 8 year old how to shoot, unles you want to live out your pathetic unfulfilled marksmanship dreams through them or some other cliche tripe.

Introduce them to guns at a very young age, let them shoot when they're older.  Kids should be taught early on proper gun safety and handling.  Teach them that a gun is not a toy.

It's a great way to teach responsibility, trust and respect.  Along with physics, geometry, analytical thinking, patience, self-control and concentration.

and it's fun as hell to shoot guns at shit 'n' stuff.

You're in the South, though.

I remember being introduced to firearms when I was still in single digits of age, probably around 6 or 7, but didn't actually fire one (that wasn't an air rifle) until I was like 15.
You can introduce them to your kids whenever you want to, but the only necessary skill to instill is the safety issue so they don't become someone who shoots themself or someone else. However, if they become interested, you can encourage them to pursue the hobby to their utmost desire.

Wont matter much in awhile anyways...

Showing how the gun works and what it can do is helpful from an early age. 3rd grade was when I got my first BB Gun. Fired a real gun in 4th, which happened to be a 12 gauge shot gun XD. Moderation is necessary sure, but knowing how a gun works and what it can do is more important. The unknown is what can kill a curious 8 yr old, or any age person for that matter. Being taught how a gun works and the proper methods of use  probably has instilled in me a passion for firearms for the rest of my life.

Just fucking got a Bushmaster AR-15 Varminter for my 16th birthday, excited as fuck. Great, great rifle.

Edit: https://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l111/randystacye/Gun%20Forum%20Pics/BushmasterVarminter.gif

Same Rifle, similar optics, no sholder strap

Edit2: Ill get real pics later this week probably.

holy shit

anyway, i believe that there was once a time here in NI that guns were actually very easy to acquire
if possible it would be good to teach your children at an early age that guns are more than toys.

I mean look at me,
ive never actually held a real gun before (damn uk laws)
but i know how to not shoot myself accidentally

but i taught this to myself

Very early, if they are around unloaded and safe guns from and early age they don't have that "omg its a gunzorz" thought when they see one and decide to play with it. They won't want to play with it and if they do handle it they could do it safely.

Yeah mine too.

EDIT:  Oh and I shot my first BB gun at the age of 6. Ever since I've loved em. Fired my first gun at 13.

I think gun safety is important, so long as that point is given and your kid isn't a foolish disobeying asshole then having him around guns and firing them shouldn't but a safety issue.

Id only teach them basics if they're curious at a young age, and keeping it vague, but simple.

A 10 year old doesnt need to know how to kill somebody/something.
Edit: What I mean is how to shoot, not about learning about how a rifle/gun works and whatnot

But in Australia, shits different here. Ive shot an AuStyer with the army cadets, which is under 1 on 1 supervision... and normal people wouldnt necessarily get an opportunity to do that. Ive also shot an AK47, but that was in Vietnam... and Im also a member of a saturday night rifle competition at the local pistol club, where a bunch of friends and I go to shoot some targets.

As for owning/introducing fucking AR-15s and shit to kids, no no no.

But then again, most of you do live in the US, and you can do that stuff anyway. So I guess its up to you.
