So here's the plan so far:

2 x 120mm fans in the front that suck cool air in
2 x 120mm fans in the top that blow air out
1 x 120mm fan in the back to blow air out (this fan will be placed in the front of the case between the other two if I can make room, however the standard mounts (4 in 3 harddisk racks) take up 3 of the 9 5.25 slots each, and I have a DVD rw drive that I am placing in the bottom leaving no room for a 3rd 4 in 3 )
1 x Zalman "standing" CPU cooler blowing air in the direction of the rear vent
https://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t178/DjurS/Clipboard-3.jpg
(yes I am bored and have little to do at the moment

The Cooler Master Centurion 590 case that I have chosen because of it's price and features comes without a clear sidepanel, and I don't like / want to pay for the official window by Cooler master, so I am doing a DYI job like this:
https://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t178/DjurS/Clipboard-4.jpg
which I think will do nicely... (I am closing up the side on purpose to help airflow)

the bottom window is for my Corsair HX620W PSU which just happens to be red, which suits me perfectly since the 5 fans have red LEDs in them

Now, has anyone got any suggestions or anything to make it nicer?
I have been thinking about doing something more "creative" with the window cutout, but I can't think of anything atm...

Looks Like a good plan.  (By the way the psu sucks cool air from the bottom and pushes it out the back) That's pretty much how I have my 690 set up (basically the same case) I have 1 120mm fan infront of the HDD's which are at the bottom (the only internal diff between the 2 cases) and 1 in a 4 in 3 drive cage from my old stacker.  I do have the lower side panel fan pulling air out from the vid card mostly just because I had an extra fan.  And I do plan on making a side window eventually as I don't like the factory one or having the vents in the side of the case.

Oh you're right
silly me...

I was also looking at the 690 but I didn't really like it (everyone has their own taste )
I was also thinking about cutting in / taking out some of the empty PCI covers from the back of the case to help the VGA card get some fresh air, but I won't be doing that unless I notice some temperature problems when the build is complete

Shame Lian Li doesn't sell their PCI covers in loose weight
https://www.silverpcs.com/images/pci_coverplate_b.jpg

Do you have any ideas about how I could do the cutout differently while still beeing able to see all my delicious hardware

I was actually going to get the 590 but microcenter was out of them at the time.  I actually bought it for my server but liked it so much I moved my main rig into it.

i think your drawing for the window is about the only option.  I'd love to have a solid side panel to cut up so it wouldn't have to be so close to the top corner due to the upper fan spot (which I can't use due to my cpu cooler)

What CPU cooler do you have that is so big it blocks the top vent ?? :S

I might have to cut small holes in my plexi-sidepanel because of my GFX heatpipes beeing too long

Gawd, 5 case fans? Overkill. You can easily cut out the top two.

They are silent fans, so noice won't be an issue... and I would like to be able to speed them down if I wish to do so, while still cooling effectively

With 5 fans, there will be noise, yes.

The top fan more towards the front of the case is going to create turbulence in the cool air going towards your CPU cooler, so it probably won't cool as effectively.

Yes, but nothing significant considering the CPU fan running 25db when @ max load while all the small fans are @ 15db

I don't mind tbh.. as long as my PC is cool in more than one way
And I just don't see why I should spend as much money on a case as I do on mobo/gfx/PSU

Like I said, having 5 fans running slower will be less noisy than having two fans that run @ max velocity...

I have 7 plus the 2 on my heatsink, yet it is still very quiet unless i'm gaming.  Sunbeam Rheobus on 5-7v and they are quiet (even my 4 high speed yate's) and 12v when highly stressing.  But even gaming doesn't produce enough heat to turn them past 7v.

and floppy I have a TRUE, there is about 1/4" gap between the heat sink and side panel.

well, you can assume that the fans will add ~2dB, so that's a total of 35dB, and that's without the PSU and GPU.

Noise aside, those top fans may also disturb the front/back airflow, thus reducing the effect. Tbh, go with a clean, sealed off front-back airflow.

Is TRUE a brand or what?

HIDEOUS FLOPPY? It's the sexiest cooler there is, except for perhaps the IFX-14

The intel boxed cooler looks nicer than those radiators tbh

I am very straight mate, I just can't imagine seeing myself look at a PC with that without thinking "WTF" and then backing off slowly, trying not to laugh...

Looks don't matter, performance does.  And it doesn't really look as bad once installed.  And it cools waaaaaayyyyyyy better than the stock Intel crap.
