Well i'm looking to upgrade my mainboard and CPU after the first of the year and I have a couple questions.

This is what i'll be getting.

I will not be upgrading my video card because I think my 8800GT is good enough for another year.

So here is my question. I have 4 sticks of 1GB DDR 2 800 rated at 4-4-4-12 at 2.1v and was wondering if this is going to be an issue with the mainboard? I want to try and push the timings to 3-3-3-10 at 2.1v because I can run 4-4-4-12 right now at 1.95v. The total cost is well within my budget. So its just a compatibility issue.

Don't get me wrong, that's all good stuff, but it somehow feels wrong recommending that stuff when the new line has just been released. Admittedly it's a little more expensive, but for future proofing it'd be worthwhile. Intel are not going to change their sockets for a good few years yet.

If I were to upgrade to Core i7 it would be way outside my budget. I would have to buy new ram as well. I won't be buying this stuff on credit. I have to save the money up over the next 2 months to get it.

Edit: A friend of mine had a good saying. "New is not always better." Meaning if I wait a year for prices to come down and for them to smooth out any bugs they might fine. But, to be honest E8400 could easily last me 2 years before upgrading.

Yeah thats fair enough. I was just thinking, if you're buying it all now, the mobo and RAM would last you past your next CPU upgrade. It should be cheaper by the time you're actually going to buy it. 2 months is quite a while in computer terms, maybe have another look when you're finally ready to buy.

I really doubt you can push those timings on this ram (I have the same) but good luck. The motherboard is definitely good and so is the CPU. With that cooler you'll take it to 4GHz on ease.

As long as you're not interested in increasing your e-penis size by getting an i7 and just want something that'll provide you with a good gaming experience, you picked some pretty good stuff.

Another reason I went Intel this time around is because of SSE4. DivX has SSE4 for rendering video. So i'm hoping it will help.

I plan only pushing it to 3.6GHz. 400x9 = 3600Mhz CPU Speed 1600Mhz FSB

I think it is possible to push the ram that far but I think I also have to increase the chipset voltage if I read correctly somewhere.

im running an e5200 at 3.8ghz with no increased voltage etc on pc6400. you should easily get 4ghz with no hassle!

I got another question for you guys. Well being on a budget this year if I got the E7200 and OC'ed it to 3.8Ghz what are the chances of acually doing it? Anyone else here have a E7200 @ 3.8Ghz?

It's 50/50. Som e of them do 4GHz easily, some won't get past 3.5. E5200 is a better bet for OC'ing it seems. No problems hitting 3.6GHz+ on pretty much any of them.

As for a passive heatsink for overclocker, TRUE 120.

I've got another question for you guys. I know on AMD's standard CPUs you can not raise the multiplier but you can lower it. Is this the same for Intel CPUs?

Sweet that means if I get the E7200 I can drop it down to 9 and get 3.6Ghz instead of trying to push 3.8Ghz.

I'd be with ghetto. You can save yourself another upgrade if you just wait for a bit until you have the cash for i7, if that is what you really want. It's not as if you need this right now, or do you?

i7 is pretty enthusiastic stuff and not even meant for regular gamers, i5 then, well, no one knows what it'll perform like.

i'm actually building 2 computers not one. I'm keeping my AMD 5600 and mobo and buying new parts for a work computer. One I can do rendering and such on.

@DU: I thought the HR-01 was better as a passive cooler because of bigger fin spacing? Pretty sure I've read this at SPCR.

The one i'm using now works great. Freezer7 64 version. Keeps my CPU well cool.

Seriously, Don't go i7 unless you just won the lottery...

I've got pretty much the same base system as you lined up for purchase in January..

i7 isn't really "gaming minded" and most games out now won't even utilize quad cores... (yes some do and most will in the future, but this is NOW)

Also, you can allways "wait" for newer hardware to drop in price, some day you just have to say "now" or you will never get the upgrade/new PC

As for future proof, the E8400 OC'ed to 3.6 Ghz (which can be done simply by changing the FSB to 400Mhz) will easily last you another 2-3 years if you upgrade your GFX card further down the line...

Your thoughts, insights, and musings on this matter intrigue me

Ok so let me get this straight. To overclock to 3.6Ghz I need to...

Change multiplier to 9.
Lower the DRAM frequency to 533.
Raise FSB to 400
Apply correct CPU voltage to create stability.

Of course doing all this in small increments. Correct me if i'm wrong please.

uhm.. with a P5Q and a E8400 all you need to do is adjust the FSB to 400Mhz since the multiplier is already at 9x
Voltage is not needed if you stick to 400Mhz @ 9x and then adjust your RAM multiplier so that they are still running at their standard Mhz
