According to relationship experts at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, romantic comedies give people unrealistic ideas about love and sex, and cause them to "fail to communicate with their partner." Here's more:

Psychologists at the family and personal relationships laboratory at the university studied 40 top box office hits between 1995 and 2005, and identified common themes which they believed were unrealistic.

The university's Dr Bjarne Holmes said: "Marriage counselors often see couples who believe that sex should always be perfect,(lol'ed at this) and if someone is meant to be with you then they will know what you want without you needing to communicate it. We now have some emerging evidence that suggests popular media play a role in perpetuating these ideas in people's minds. The problem is that while most of us know that the idea of a perfect relationship is unrealistic, some of us are still more influenced by media portrayals than we realize."

Do you think this is true? Is real-life romance a big ol' letdown? Sure, lots of people like the idea of a perfect man or "happily ever after," but does that mean we're all unable to separate fantasy from reality?

Also, have you ever had an experience that could have been right out of a romantic movie (think John Cusack holding up a boom box)?

If there is someone here, a man (basically) who has ever watched through an entire "romantic comedy" please kill yourself now, especially if it has that Brit in it, forgot his name, but all he ever does is Romantic Comedies, you know that guy, anyway, kill yourself extra if it was a film with that guy

The 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movie made me realize that nothing in my life will ever be as fulfilling as that. Plus, no Keira Knightley...

Although recently, a bunch of teenage girls obtained unrealistic expectations of men that will fester for a few decades. Thanks a lot, Twilight.

Yeah, I sorta figured this out

I figured that when I was finding disappointment with relationships and I was basing a perfect relationship on the common theme of movies

Basically, the common theme IMO is:  there is always someone right, if they're right they will love you unconditionally, all relationships can be saved, even incredibly hot women can be smart, great in bed, and a perfect match

Actually, long term relationships have always been and are just hard. Now we have a scapegoat.

Move on, move on.

Any movie with John Cusack playing a major role is excused from the above statement as John Cusack is a fucking legend.

I like his movies you macho tattooed leather-jacket-wearing biker dude

Sadly people are very much influenced by movies and TV (in my oppinion). Not just relationship wise either.
In almost all Movies or TV shows all parents have bad relationships with their children, and cool kids kids are always extremely disrespectful to their parents. Its currently the biggest cliché on TV. And it translates to RL. Kids think its or and cool to behave like that, and parents think its normal.

Porn is bad also. Women start to expect us all to have prostates that work all the time.... amirite?
i think a guy or girlie who watches too much porn has a high probability of having unrealistic ideas of what love making is ;D
