So, I have a bit of money and should get some more at Christmas, and I think it's about time I upgraded from my old 7600GS.

So I was looking for a new graphics card, costing around $300-$400. Seeing how I know very little about graphics cards, I thought of coming to you charismatic stallions for advice. It's a PCI-E card too.

Ta.

Not too sure on AU shops, but a 4870 comes under that budget

Might be cheaper on other sites, that's just one google shown me

Tis a good card, too.

Is it worth it to pay an extra $80 or so for a 1GB 4870?

What resolution would you be playing games at.

My monitor 22" has a native resolution of about 1400x900 or so.

The 1GB is only really useful for high resolutions 1920*1200 and higher, using it on a lower res is just a waste of money.

Exactory!

Is it an old 22" monitor?? 1400x900 sound very low for 22" :S

e.g. the samsung T200 (want for christmas ) is 20" and runs native @ 1680x1050

I'm sitting two feet away from my screen so there is NO WAY I'm gaming on a 26"

22 is the very max I would want... and since the T220 runs the same resolution as T200 I wanted the pixel density over the screen size

And tbh I don't need the TV tuner of the HD version

I thought I needed the speakers for my ps3 because some fucking idiot who won't be named (lets just call him Skittles) told me I needed them and I couldn't use the optical out for audio.

Make sure your PSU is up to the job. A 4870 is quiet a step up from a 7600
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

not to mention the rest of his hardware. What kind of CPU do you have? It may be such a big bottleneck that he's better of with a 4850.

And yezz, I am back .

oh my god with the "high resolution blah blah 1GB" shit.  smoother fps is worth it (for ME at least).

that resolution seems like a 19" resolution rather than a 22".  must be an older LCD...

Alright, thanks for the help guys.
I'm guessing I will need to step up from all my old hardware. (Still using DDR Ram : /)

Processor: AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
RAM: 2G Kingston DDR Ram (2x1GB)
Mobo: Gigabyte  K8 Triton nForce 4 SLI
Graphics Card: NVIDIA 7600GS
Monitor: ASUS 22" Monitor ( Don't know the name.)
Hard Drive: I believe it's a western digital 200gb.

What is a program I can use to find out my PSU? (Don't really feel like looking into my PC atm)

Thanks for the help.

Or pay another 200 dollars later, when you find that you can't power it.

To be perfectly honest, Jestar, a 4850 + good new power supply will use up most of that 400 dollars in aus.  Make it a 4870, and you'll probably be a little lot over budget.

Like Baby's card, that thing is already $365.  If you get a 4870, and I'm guessing you have a 500W 12 Amp PSU (I used to have a 7600 GS a few months ago), unless you get a generic SHAW (they seem to break down a lot), a decent psu at the very, very least is $80.  And that's from MSY, and you know that they don't tend to stock up.  If you want a better PSU, you'll be paying something around 200 dollars.  = $565.

Get the HD4850 + overclock.

That pc is outdated for an 4870. Hell even with an 4850 the 3800+ will be a bottleneck.
But with a new CPU, comes a new mobo + ram. And I think your PSU isn't sufficient either.

I'd save up a bit more and buy a new system.

try gaming with a 30", its hard for me to jump in a battle since my screen is huge and i cannot see 100% of it.
Yeah, as they said 1gb is a waste for taht kind of resolution 512mb is enough and the 4870 has received much praise for its price/performance.

Also, i've seen many Hp and other desktops with intel 4-cores / AMD tri cores and Intel 2 cores for around 600€.
It doesn't look to bad i guess.
