This is a known problem unfortunately Relic Online + Steam = potential shitstorm

I was on the brink of buying CoH gold last year off steam but found warnings online at the last mintue and got it instore for £20.

If it's any consolation it really isn't that good a game online and hamachi with friends with your 'acquired' version will be 90% of the fun you can have with it.
not true. CoH with mates online is hella fun. also, goin into a random game alone and being a dick is always fun. i.e. build noting but tanktraps. EVERYWHERE. random teammates get a lil pissed

Also, I think I must be one of the only one's then who get shit speeds or you're all lying.

The highest I've got is about 600, and that didn't last long. Average is maybe 200-400, with times it's below 100KBPS.

I can download from other places at around 800, 900 max.
if you attempt to open the game it will promt you that it is not finished downloading, keep this prompt open or even check the box "launch as soon as ready", this will significantly boost your DL speed as steam then switches from some kind of "download-but-don't-steal-too-much-bandwith" to a "GOGOGOGO" mode

At least it does for me I believe steam monitors your in/out connections to avoid ruining your PING if you should be playing a game that requires the bandwith

Setting your connection speed appropriately in the settings might also help you get a better server from valve's end, but I am not sure though..
Doesn't work. I do it all the time to get an ETA for the download.

Steam has always worked well for me, generally I think if a game has all that piracy protection bullshit on it THEN you start having issues. Although Steam and Valve should really make sure that everything works together before they start charging people for it mostly the problems that arise are the fault of the game producer. I've bought quite a lot off Steam and never had a problem, (unless you count having to run "Rockstar Social Club" or
create a Windows Live account to play GTA4 which is just annoying.)

To be honest FF I think your problems are just you...

At home I have a modest 8Mbps broadline line and Steam is often one of the only programs/download sources I use that maxes out my downstream bandwidth- regularly see 800-900kbps from Steam Store purchases whereas normal ftp/http downloads barely touch 200kbps. Even on my Rapidshare / Depositfiles premium accounts with 'super' speeds I rarely touch 250kbps. Steam is my platform of choice to be honest, no pesky CD's or CD-keys on slips of paper/manuals that you have to find everytime you want to reinstall, and no need to carry your game library around with you whenever you go to a LAN or different location (i.e. for me, University). Just take my PC and Steam account details and I can play every game I purchased without problem .

And CoH-online is fucking awesome, definitely one of the best RTS games for online (casual and competitive) in a long, long, long time.

use IDM & your download speeds will reach what you're getting with steam.

I only found IDM boosted speeds back in the 56k/ISDN days... doesn't seem to do much for my broadband line .

I get top speeds on my Rapidshare account with IDM. The difference between browser downloads and IDM is unbelievable.

But yeah, always shit speeds on Steam. I wish they'd just let me download the game out of their program. I know it's unlikely to happen, but it would make me happier. Or maybe have the ability to import a whole game into Steam that you had previously.

I get 25kbps m8.

Mostly because I have a shit connection m8.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.
