Hai, so, i've got a NAS (Buffalo Linkstation Live 500gb,and link to manual here).

It works as a printserver, or rather, it did, and doesn't any more. And i want it to work.

Originally, it worked fine as a network printer (plug printer in via usb to nas, click enable print server in nas config, and on the PC's, add the printer using the network name, and select the correct drivers). Also, when you looked at the print queue, there was always a ~1.4mb document there called "remote downlevel document".

Now, nothing will print from anyof the computers in the house. When you try and print something, the application freezes, and you have to kill the process. Also in the print queue, the "remote downlevel document" job has dissapeared.

So far I have tried:
  • Enabling and disabling the printserver using the nas config
  • Turning the NAS on and off again
  • Disconnecting and reconnecting the NAS from the network
  • Turning the PC's off and on again
  • Deleting and re-adding the network printer
  • Window's pr0 printer troubleshooter (wat)
  • Resetting the NAS to default settings and reconfiguring
and it hasn't worked What i haven't bothered trying yet because i can't be arsed:
  • reformatting the entire nas (probably won't do anything and i cba to back up the data)
  • re-firmwaring it (same version of firmware, it has the newest) (cba tbh)

Also- all the other functions of the NAS work perfectly normally.

So, what do you guys think I should do to get my print server working again? (Cos it's the sex and i need it)

I'd definitely upgrade to the latest firmware for a start. But yeah. PrintServers + NAS's tend to be a gigantic pain in the ass in my experience.

Well, there isn't actually any newer firmware (oops brbclarifying that in the OP), would reinstalling (or whatever the term is for firmware lolz) actually make much of a difference?

And i only use the printserver on it because it's easier than having to turn a laptop on and plug the printer in every time that you want to fix. Or rather it would be if it actually worked, lel

Try it, what's the worst that could happen?

Yeah...
fair point

brb backing it all up to USB, lol

(which is rather stupid, instead of being clever and transfering data from the USB HDD direct to the NAS HDD, it copies it across the network to your computer and then back again )

Heh, that's computers for you. I'm sure nothing will go wrong, but again, it's a computer so no doubt you'll end up bricking it.

This is basically a last resort before i RMA it, i've tried pretty much everything

Also, if anyone else has any other suggestions, do say, because i'll start the lengthy copy operation tomorrow (backing up 40gb over network ftl tbh) and if i can avoid this, i'd be happy as it will take ages

Spoiler (highlight to read):
go on, i'll give you karmaz

How many computers use the NAS as a print server? (Just checking it is actually the NAS causing the problem)

Unfortunately, the layout of that particular NAS management interface is pretty shit... so make sure you check every corner for a little setting which could be causing the problem.

You've already tried many of the things I would have suggested, so if you can't find any extra settings, re imaging it would be the best option. (sux2bu)

Every computer in the house (4 or 5) use the NAS as the print server

Doesn't work on any of them...

Reimaging time tbh
