Anyone have any experience with 8 GBs of ram on 64bit vista?

So I'm upgrading all of the family computers and it's going to involve buying more ram... and I just found this: http://shop3.frys.com/product/5711782;j … IN_RSLT_PG deal at frys (I'd have to go into the store to find them in stock) and for 40 bucks I figure why not?

At the moment I have 4 GBs of patriot ram in my eVGA 680i motherboard and I know that I would rarely (if ever) utilize more than 4 GBs but just in case I ever wanted to run photoshop, crysis, and encode a video at the same time... should I go for it or is it more trouble than it's worth?

I have 8GB in my main rig. It does tend to run smoother and nicer. But I whore VMs ...

I have 8GB, I have 2GB X 4 sticks.. All running at 1000MHz, so you should be fine. I've noticed smoother gameplay, and I was able to remove the page file system without the worry of running out of memory..

I had 2GB, now I have 4GB, my "Vista Rating" increased significantly, but I don't notice too much of a difference. Then again, I'm on Vista 32BIT, so it only recognizes 3GB of it.

You can do it with 4GB regardless. Probably can do it with 3 too. The extra 4 GB probably doesn't make as much as a difference as the speed of the ram (and even then, 32 bit won't use more than 3 gb ram anyway)

I've had Half Life 2 crash on me with 4GB of memory without a page file system.. I don't know why, but that's the only game I've experienced that.

I currently have 4Gb and Vista 64, is it really worth is to run without a pagefile though? Seems a little sketchy, especially on Vista.

Yeah, it's faster (some/most of the time) and supposedly more secure because there's no decrypted info written to the hard drive and not wiped (but seriously, who here works for the CIA).

Page file's just to make room for stuff to be written to ram, and that writing to the hard drive is slow. After a point I doubt disabling page file will make a difference.

Disabling the pagefile when you add more RAM is pointless.

Windows will not use the pagefile in preference to more RAM.

The pagefile is only used when you try to use more memory than you have available in physical RAM.

Just set the pagefile to be managed by windows and forget about it.

Yeah, you only see benefit if you are using more memory than you have room for. Like, if you have 2GB of RAM but are using 2.2GB of memory. Disabling pagefile is good here because the RAM will just delete the oldest data and store new, otherwise you'd write/read from the hard drive which is considerably slower.

If you never use more memory than you have RAM, you won't see any benefit at all to disabling/changing the pagefile. Though, I do believe it reserves hard drive space, so I guess that's a benefit.
