HDMI cables- Does price give quality?

I want a 5 metre HDMI cable to link my laptop to my HDTV.

Then I began to wonder if buying a cheap cable like this sacrifice the picture quality etc.
I thought it didn't but then some told me it did and I got confused

Please could you just clarify this for me.

I saw something on the news about a month ago. They did a demonstration with HDMI cables and there wasn't any difference in picture from the cheap to the expensive one.

It's a digital format. It makes fuck all difference.

Either you have perfect picture or broken horrible picture. There is no in between (except maybe the occasional bit of jitter if you have a really bad cable). There is no point in the highly priced top end cables - those are a throw back to the days of analog interconnects where cable quality was vitally important.

The only scenario in which you'd buy anything other than the cheapest cable you can find in any reputable store is if you're expecting to put it in use in an interference-heavy environment such as near really heavy power closets, around a microwave oven, or in a wiring closet. You'll get by running the cheapest properly assembled HDMI cables you can find between two components in close proximity in most all scenarios.

You know how they talk about them in terms of bandwidth? Does that mean that theoretically speaking, if you were sending a stupidly high quality video over it, it would lose quality? I know fuck all about HDMI and how the rate them, I just saw in my local electronics store they had them sorted by bandwidth in Gb/s.

But it also depends on what's coming out of the cable box. Some channels have such crappy quality to begin with you won't notice a difference. You'll get the best improvement on HD channels (you guys are probs better stocked on these in the US than we are over here).

No. You need a cable rated high enough for the resolution/refresh you want to use. Like with DVI and dual link DVI (although there is also single and dual link HDMI, so that's not the best example). There are versions from 1.0 to 1.3 and they each get slightly better bandwidth, but are all backwards compatible. The lowest end HDMI cables will support 1080p, you only need higher end ones for extremely high resolutions (or if you want a higher than typical refresh rate). I think some of the newest audio formats are only fully supported over newer higher bandwidth cables.

Well obviously if the source is low quality you're going to have a hard time noticing the difference. But the quality will probably be better.

The more important aspects of a good quality picture when it comes to HD, is the TV and the source (blu ray, console game etc..) - Cables don't really mean jack shit. I never get when people buy really good HDTV's and really good HDMI cables etc.. but then only ever feed the TV with an SD signal
