"ANTIOCH, Calif. - As more and more black renters began moving into this mostly white San Francisco Bay Area suburb a few years ago, neighbors started complaining about loud parties, mean pit bulls, blaring car radios, prostitution, drug dealing and muggings of schoolchildren.

In 2006, as the influx reached its peak, the police department formed a special crime-fighting unit to deal with the complaints, and authorities began cracking down on tenants in federally subsidized housing.

Now that police unit is the focus of lawsuits by black families who allege the city of 100,000 is orchestrating a campaign to drive them out."

Is it right for the current residents to be upset about the rise of issues when "some" of the section 8 renters get involved with crime or whatever?

I can see how it can be considered racism or stereotyping, but as long as they're fulfilling those stereotypes, they shouldn't complain and have to deal with the consequences.

Doesn't matter what race or religion you are, if you live in an upscale neighborhood in the hills, it's understood that the area is geared towards a peaceful and quiet community. You may own that particular plot of land, but you still have to play by the entire community's rules.

If drug dealers and prostitutes moved into my area I think I'd want something done about it.

Its a huge problem in Aus, there isn't so much subsidised housing, they just get subsidised rent so the scumbags can turn up anywhere.
We had a drug dealer move in across the road from us, the fuzz shot him dead.
Good for them.

PS Don't pull a .22 on two Police officers armed with .357 magnums, you're going to lose.

I can see why SF would react like this. I really doubt any other city would have reacted differently. Liberalism isn't the same thing as being a pushover -- although some liberals are.

The point is... if crime is going on, then the police SHOULD get involved in dealing with it, regardless of how liberal the city might be.

Yes, a lot of West Coast liberals are hypocrites and race bait, but in this particular case, I can agree with their course of action.

If you want to see who the most hypocritical liberals in America are, watch this whole Rod Blagojevich debacle. Chicago seems a lot nuttier than SF when it comes to corruption.

Between 2000 and 2007, Antioch's black population nearly doubled from 8,824 to 16,316. And the number of Antioch renters receiving federal subsidies climbed almost 50 percent between 2003 and 2007 to 1,582, the majority of them black.

Police sent 315 complaints about subsidized tenants to the Contra Costa Housing Authority, which manages the federal program in the city, and urged the agency to evict many of them for lease violations such as drug use or gun possession. Lawyers for the tenants said 70 percent of the eviction recommendations were aimed at black renters. The housing authority turned down most of the requests.

This is hardly racism. It's math. If the majority of the renters are black, chances are the majority of the renters being investigated are going to be black, especially if renters are the cause of the disturbances.

And how can the family with the father on parole be complaining of illegal searches? I thought, as a parolee, you lost that right until your parole was over, considering you have been convicted of a crime already?

All in all, there is a pretty clear correlation between in the influx of renters and the increase in crime, especially violent crime. Let them crack down.

Absolutely. The only reason why relatives of parolees would complain about searches is because they either like to be a pain in the ass or they don't have a clear understanding of the law.

There's a reason why cops profile... because it works.
