How did Homer Simpson become a nuclear technician?

I mean, we all know Homer has always been a moron. Doesn't being a nuclear technician entail some knowledge of nuclear engineering? Or nuclear science? Or anything that requires an iota of intelligence? Homer doesn't strike me as the intellectual type who would learn nuclear engineering nor the hardworking type who would read manual after manual on nuclear reactor operation.

Any ideas?

Well I think that comes from the fact that the Mr. Burns character is very greedy, and is not willing to pay the salary of a trained technician.

That is correct.

One of the older episodes
After losing his job at the bowling alley or something, he needed money for their new baby (bart) and marge.
Something like that.

There was an episode where they explained it but I forgot how it went. It was probably the first season, they show Homer working at the Bowlarama and either getting fired or quitting. I'm pretty sure he was at Moe's where Lenny and Carl told him that the nuclear power plant needed a safety engineer. I don't remember what he said to Mr Burns to get the job though.

He quit his dream job at the bowling alley as he needed the money, he went to mr burns and told him that though he didn't have any qualifications he would take any form of abuse he was given just so that he had the money he needed to support his family. There's probably some more to it than that but thats the basic outline.
