Ok, I need an acoustic guitar. I've had an electric for over a year now, and can play some stuff, mainly just parts from songs I like. I'd like to get more into playing, but just for myself. Nothing serious.

I figure an acoustic guitar would help, and I need one for an occasion soon...

So this means I'm not wanting to spend anything insane, with my maximum being £150.

I'm in the UK, too, so if any links are posted please let them be UK links

I've been looking at this... http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/75496 (Also, I heard this is one of the best and cheapest sites to buy from online)

Any thoughts? Recommendations?

Cheers

The Celebrity model by Ovation is a very nice starter guitar.  It was my first acoustic I actually bought and still the guitar I play the most.

It listed at around 600 USD at the time, but you can find great deals for around half that.

Ovation makes a large assortment of affordable guitars.  Check 'em out at a local music shop in your area.  Remember, you can also barter the price...never pay retail.  Shalom!

Mine was priced at around $550 and I payed $310 after bitching enough.  The mark up on instruments is huge, so be persistant.

Firstly, "you figure an acoustic guitar would help". Help with what? What musical style or guitar styles/techniques are you hoping to learn? If you're into hard-rock and heavy metal then an acoustic probably isn't the best choice for you, neither is it if you're into riffing and solo techniques- just need to clarify exactly why you're deviating from an electric guitar into the world of acoustics .

I've had a Yamaha and an Ibanez acoustic in the past and they've both served their (modest) purposes well. Anything in the £100-150 quid bracket that suits your fancy and neck/fret style will do the job just fine for basic learning and the occasional strum and twiddle. Again though, remember at times that a nice electric-driven humbucker pickup is easier to play than a nylon-stringed acoustic... it all depends on what and how you want to play.

Well I wanna try different things.

I have some acoustic songs I wanna learn, and they don't sound right on the Electric, and I've used an acoustic a few times and there's parts I like from it over the electric.

It will help me learn more and give me more stuff to play.

Don't question my post!

Might go for an Ovation... That black one did look nice...

Ibanez are a very good brand, i'm not really an acoustic person but they make very nice electrics and basses. And quite cheap too

Before you pick the one you want to buy you should really go to a store and try them out to see which one feels comfortable to you.  You would use a cheap guitar that feels good to you more than an expensive one that does not.

What he said. I recommend you check out some Takamines.

I have a Maton EM325c. It's a fucking fantastic guitar, cost me $2K though, that's in kiwi dollars which is only 667 pounds. Still quite steep and too much for you.

Look, in all honesty you shouldn't buy online without trying it. I mean you can get the most expensive guitar and find that you don't actually like the feel of playing it or the sound. You can get the guitar that everyone recommends and has rave reviews but find that it just doesn't feel right. You really need to spend a decent amount of time going to music shops, trying the instruments out and finding what you like and what you don't like in an acoustic. I spent over a year shopping for my guitar, (with some benefit as over the year the guitar dropped in price by $500,) even then I altered it by lowering the bridge to fit with my playing style.

As for brand advice from me, well Ibanez are good it's true although Ibanez mostly do their best work with basses. Yamaha guitars are decent in the electro-acoustic department, they have a decent sound, they're easy to play and are fairly priced. Like Musou recommended Takamine is another good brand, I think it's because they do high-end guitars as well as beginners guitars. I haven't tried an Ovation. Steer away from getting a Fender acoustic, they're not very good I find but that's just my opinion.

But seriously dude, don't just pick a guitar off recommendations and websites; actually try a few out.

Yeah, I'm a complete wanker when it comes to acoustic guitars.

As always, Ty, your overly long posts prove useful and informative...

I think I'll go to a shop and try a few out.

Get a Takamine. I have had a Yamaha (didn't like it) and I currently own an Ibanez and Takamine. I prefer the Tak because although it is not as forgiving as the Ibanez it is much more rewarding in sound. Also,  I can assure you if you put down the electric for a month or two and work on your chord progressions on an acoustic you will find your ability improving greatly. Remember, acoustics don't hide the flaws like distortion can and electrics play a lot faster, meaning the distance between the neck and the strings is greater. It will really develop some finger strength and chops. Good luck.
