I got a Seagate Barracuda that is screwed up. I don't know if it's bad sectors, or faulty mechanics...But I have been wanting to try and fix it. What programs are there that I can use to either analyze the HD or repair it and fix bad sectors or overwrite those bad sectors?

I got the HD setup and I'm using Acronis Disk Director to examine it, but it's getting no where, and is having read errors to various sectors...

Meh same here with my WD...

I am just sending it in since they have a 3 year warranty and I bought it 2 years ago...

Look on seagate's support section, they have a couple of diagnostic/repair utilities. Can't remember the name of them off the top of my head, but i know they exist

Try HDD Regenerator. It comes with the latest edition of Hiren's Boot CD, which you can get on thepiratebay.

EDIT:

It's called SeaTools.

Ya, I actually remember trying that once, and I think it failed. But, could be a little more specific about this? This method is using the DOS command prompt right?

Yes.

Though someones chkdsk can mess up files, so make sure you back stuff up of course.

In my opinion, WD has a better toolset.

If that's where Windows is, of course it won't boot to Windows. You could plug it back in, pop your Windows disc into the cd drive and run a reinstallation. It won't overwrite your games or documents, but it will probably skip any bad sectors and can get you back up and running. From there, make a backup onto another drive (WD Tools is useful) and then go about with further repairs as required.

If you can boot Windows into safe mode, you could run Driver Cleaner, Abexo/Eusing Free Registry Cleaner(s), CCLeaner and anti-malware like Spybot to see if there's any problems along those lines. Careful with the registry cleaners, though; you can often just make it worse if you don't pay attention to what they're 'fixing.' I often find it easier to ghost over with another Windows installation rather than spend a day dicking around with third party programs.

I also find Secunia PSI to be particularly useful, but don't let it run actively when you aren't actually using it.

Reboot, bad sectors will be fixed and you'll see the computer fixing them (When I did it, it totally spammed me with like, 100's a second)

Check the bios that your Hdd with windows is set as a boot device.  Some BIOS's will jack this all up when adding and removing drives.

Along these lines (depending on the BIOS), you sometimes have to remove all other options from the boot priority list to force the matter on the hard drive.

It wasn't the hard drive with windows on it. I tried putting the Acronis Disk Director back in and it loaded that. From there I clicked on an option 'Continue to boot Windows' and it loaded into windows. I'm a little nervous about that boot error, so now I'm backing up all my personal stuff.

I checked BIOS and the boot devices are set up as CD then Floppy, but there was another boot option and it was set up as my WD HDD. So...Still weird it didn't boot to windows.

I'll give this a try and let ya know how it turns out.

Ok, quick update. Under Advanced BIOS Features I have this:

Hard Disk Boot Priority = WD1000JB (HDD with windows on it)
First Boot Device = CDROM
Second Boot Device = Floppy

I'll go ahead and set the first boot device to Hard Disk and disable secondary and third...and...

I get the same problem.

It's also VERY slow at boot up, meaning, when it checks for the IDE devices and HDD's it takes like, 35 seconds, then once it shows them on the boot screen I get the boot from CD/DVD: thing.

Edit: Now THIS is odd. I plugged the faulty HDD back in and now it goes through boot up faster, and loads into BIOS faster AND it boots into Windows fine...Now I know this would all seem like an indication that Windows is installed on the Segate, but its not!

I have both HDD's set up for cable select and the seagate is the slave, WD master. Weird...

I don't know how you have your drives hooked to your motherboard (whatever that is), but the reason it's faster may be due to the fact that the controller no longer has to search fruitlessly for a drive. Odd, but I've experienced something along those lines before.

Whatever the case may be, you can continue working on the problem now. If all else fails, it might even be an opportunity to move to SATA, if your board or a new rig budget allows.
