A brave and smart choice in my opinion. I think he actually realizes he scares a lot of the conservatives and needed to make a bold gesture.
So far, to my great astonishment he has been fairly open minded with a lot of his choices. Strange that. I hope my many feers about him are put to rest as his presidency takes shape.

"The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation" - Barack Obama (a freshman senator from Illinios)
He's making a speach, big deal.
Don't see how it affects anything.

Would you invite a far right wing conservative to speak for you for anything?Dilbert_X wrote:

Depends, if I were trying to build bridges and not alienate half the country I might.
Its much easier to get stuff done if half the opposition supports you, giving you 75% control.
Wouldn't that be an advantage?

So you just answered your own question.

Follows the well established tradtion of the president getting one bunch of people excited and getting elected, and then soon after pissing everybody off.
Other:
Irrelevant. The guy's not being appointed to a cabinet position. Obama wants to establish a wider voter base so he can win again in 2012, so this was a good political move. I bet Bill made the suggestion.
Plus, it's better than his old racist minister.

Nope, I know what I would do, not sure what Obama is doing, its a trivial gesture in any case.Lividbovine wrote:

Actions speak louder than who introduces your speech.
Still, probably a smart move, costs nothing and might gain something, while the pro-gays already voted Obama in so its too late to lose their vote.

As long as it's not someone like Rod Parsley or John Hagee, I don't care.
You never will agree with a conservative will you!Dilbert_X wrote:

Of course actions speak louder than words, but words and appointments are all we have right now. And don't dorget we have this wonderful media over here that loves to make a big deal out of everything.

Obama didn't get elected for being naive. He knows how to play the politics game, and he can dance with both sides. He's showing he knows how to play ball. He'll be a good president, regardless of political hypocrisy.

Slap in the face to gay rights.
Rick Warren is like a friendlier version of James Dobson. They have the same views -- they only differ in their approach to spreading hate and prejudice. Warren is especially clever about getting people to agree with him -- he was a major player behind Prop 8 in California, and much of the way it actually passed was through straight up deceit.

Agreed. Obama could still easily support gay rights legislation and asking a right-leaning pastor to give the invocation does not signal any policy shift to the center by Obama.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

He can't please everyone... 5-6 percent of the population is gay according to things i have read...(the gay folks say it's 10 percent)Turquoise wrote:

regardless... 70 percent of the country is Christian... Obama has been more that fair... so far... with a lot of things he's done...including this...
it remains to be seen how he will be as President but i am optimistic at this point...
Love is the answer
The guy sounds decent enough. There'd be problems if he picked one of those WBC psychos.

Social Conservative? lol

So, (some) gay people use deceit and quasi-psychology to convince kids they're gay.Turquoise wrote:

70% Claim to be Christian, but how many actually are?Catbox wrote:

Well, the gay population might be even smaller than 5 percent, but that's not really relevant. It's one thing to include someone at your inauguration that has different views from yourself. It's quite another to invite someone who has an agenda against a lot of your base.[TUF]Catbox wrote:

The problem is... at this point, Obama is starting to look less like a compromiser and more like an opportunist.

To be honest, we should let kids be themselves for once.
There are a few gay activists that fit the description you give, but there are a LOT more on the other side doing everything they can to disenfranchise gays.
A lot of religions seem to have an axe to grind against gays for some reason. These people need to learn how to mind their own fucking business (no pun intended).
I definitely agree with that... he is not the guy that ran for president... It's a little weird how he has changed gears so quickly and moved to the center on some things... it's pissing off a lot of the far left... like i said though... i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and i hope like heck he gets the country headed in the right direction...Turquoise wrote:

I think the gay folks are protesting anything and everything to stay in the news... they are an organization and have an agenda(as well as being a group of people)...right or wrong... they wan't what they wan't... Rick Warren is going to give a nice speech which nobody will recall a couple of years from now... the whole thing is much ado about nothing i suppose...

I just find it more acceptable that gays are bitching than to have people like Rick fueling the fire.[TUF]Catbox wrote:

It's a bit like the Civil Rights Movement was. Blacks had good reason to bitch about their situation, and thankfully, things mostly changed for the better after the movement became a success.
Thankfully, gays don't have it anywhere near as bad as blacks did, but they still face more prejudice than just about any other minority today does. Because of this, I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt, rather than the religious people against them.
