So i wanted to dual-boot Ubuntu on my PC. I've had not any problems doing this in the past, but this time I am.

I downloaded the latest 8.10 AMD64 version, cause my version was getting out dated. Burned it, booted off it, made a 20GB partition for it, made a swap partition for it, installed it, rebooted ... ERROR 22.

I've learned that ERROR 22 means that ti can't find anything to boot, or something. I found a lot of guides that say to boot from LiveCD, go to terminal and do:

Code:

sudo grub
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
grub> root (hdx,z)
grub> setup (hdx)
Tried that, several times. No fix. I tried doing setup (hdx) with different numbers, such as my main drive with XP and then my Ubuntu drive, no difference.

I tried deleting the partitions, repartitioning, and reinstalling Ubuntu. Same thing. For shits and giggles, I tried the above terminal commands again, same thing.

WTF.

Help me Linux gurus.

just do a live install its easy for ubuntu its mostly gui, if you are having problems with the OS recognizing the partition I suggest you try to get the ubuntu to work in either vmware or virtualPC and see if you have any luck there. It should be very easy to install also correct me if Im wrong but I think 8.10 had some problems I ended up using 8.04 since it was more stable than the newest one they released. Yup just checked try using 8.04 thats the latest one Ive used and never had any problems with it.

I will try 8.04 tonight, but if anyone has any ideas how to make this one work I'm all ears.

I did use the GUI install btw.

What are you dual booting it with? Maybe the 2 bootloaders are getting confused.

Are you perhaps booting a HDD with an old GRUB installation? Make sure the HDD with GRUB is the first one to boot in the BIOS.

Also, in the installer, did you install GRUB to HD0? That tends to give problems, it's best to install it onto the very disk you are installing Ubuntu on.

It's best to have Linux on a unique disk, so you don't overwrite the MBR on a disk with Windows on it.

You should confirm that it also boots into windows, if not, you might have to change the drive and partition number in GRUB.

Code:

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.list
I had to change my Vista number in GRUB from (3,0) to (1,0) once, just play around until you get it right.
