NSTC DVDs on a PAL PS3

Is there anyway to "bypass" the region coding on DVDs and allow them to be played on my PS3?
like what you could do on a PS2 with that Action Replay Max disc that contain software that can bypass region coding on DVDs

i cant stand to wait for 6 months to get Season 5 of NCIS and another year to get Season 6

AND

Dont tell me to by a multi region DVD player, i have one in the attic and its as old as hell

From what i could read of that, that only applies to games and blu-ray movies

Get the DVD player out of the attic and use that or install linux on the PS3 or use a HTPC

how do i do that
there is an option that says Install other OS but when i try it says that i need a partition on the HDD
to do that i need to format it
and i have no means of backing up my files

Oh no,
i have only like 12GB HDD space left on my PS3

anyway, say if i do install linux on my PS3, will it basically be a computer so if i insert a Region 1 DVD it would work right?
