Am I right in assuming that in most of these games you need to be part of some form of team, clan, guild or whatever, yes? That means that there's a high likelyhood that some nerdy 14 year old is going to hold some kind of e power over me. Not to mention, god forbid I ask for advice in said game, that I'd be talked down to by said kids for being a "noob".

I would curse them out lol. I was in a decent guild where everyone was helpful.

There are PLENTY of guilds that have adult members man, when I played WoW during my month trial, an older friend of mine (34) had his own guild, so as long as you join a guild/clan with adult members you wont have to worry bout those nerdy 14 year old faukers.

And, I got an email from Blizzard....

"You've Been Summoned Back to Azeroth..."

Apparently my account has been 'rewarded' 10 free days of play time and a FREE trial of The Burning Crusade expansion pack...

I don't know if I should take the offer or not...

Kinda thought of playing again, joinin up with my friend and his friends on there... i dunno

Blizzard really figured out how to get people to play. They offer free trials, they have the people who play invite their friends, and if their friends play and pay for it, the first person gets another month of free play time, then you get something like this:

"Invite a friend that has left World of Warcraft to return with a FREE 10-Day Trial of the Burning Crusade. If your friend reactivates their account and pays for a month of gametime, you will receive a month of WoW FREE! You can only invite someone who was once a paid subscriber and last played the game more than 90 days ago." You can have up to five invites out at any one time...

So, its all a big cluster fuck of rewarding each other for recruiting people, same goes for in game, you spend so much time gettin gold for fucking items that will only be good for a short while... you know what fuck them.

Same thing happens for regular games. If the game fails you lose money on it. With MMOs because the majority of them are subscription based (or like guild wars have about 3 expansions) they see a good chunk of money from that unlike most games which is a one-time purchase.
You aren't paying attention to the customer end.

I can buy Jonny Shooter from Bubba Games today and they discontinue support after two years, chances are I'll still be able to play Jonny Shooter into 2020 and beyond. If I buy Billy MMO from Bubba Games and invest 1000 hours into a character over the course of a year and the company drops it, the only people left to handle the servers will be the publisher (for as long as they're willing). But ultimately, there'd go my server-side characters, hours spent equipping them and extra deposits per month to continue playing. A third party could take up the mantle, but you'd have to start from scratch.

Case: Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

The company failed, but it kept getting patched by a third party and is still playable today.
You're right I'm judging success mainly on financial success rather than critical acclaim or public adoration.
It's important to take all three into consideration, but customer service > all.

I prefer Guild Wars or EVE, just because I believe they have less addictive game play, and excellent PvP.
From what I hear WoW PvP is currently incredible unbalanced, and heavily favors melee classes and Deathknights.

People don't give games like this enough credit, they kill a few of the weakest animals and wander around lost then get bored and quit.
I think I've said this before but that's roughly the equivalent of starting BF2, then quitting because the loading screen was boring. Game like this just have a large learning curve/barrier to entry... Sure it doesn't take much to click around but to actually know where you are going, what you are doing, have worth while equipment and most importantly friends in game to do stuff with takes a serious attempt and some time.

They really can be fun if your aren't just wondering around alone killing tiny animals...

I've never played WoW, but I used to play a much older mmorpg years ago (UO) I had a few friends "try it" and it was always annoying to hear them say how dumb the game was when all they did was make a new character, get killed by a boar then quit. Quite a bit different then hunting some of the bigger creatures with your guild for treasure to decorate your house with...

I tried the demo--a lot of people at my school are fully engaged in it, they all clapped and partied when this one kid made it to level 70, and then 80 with the new expansion, he would skip school/fake a sick day to stay home and play.  (obsessed much? )

I don't know, the whole scene and storyline didn't capture me, there isn't very much "white knuckle" action, it's more of "shit, I have less health than this guy, I'm fucked."  Your character walked at a very slow place, the lack of any sprint/run made quests almost unbearable...(I guess you get use to it, I hear there are motorcycles/horses now?)

I guess I'm an FPS guy.  I prefer running around with an M16 as opposed to casting spells and spamming attack buttons.  Maybe it's the realism factor, beats me.

Only RTS games I would play would either be Civilization IV or Age of Empires II & III.  Those games kicked ass, spawning an M1A2 Abrams in the dark ages was always entertaining.

WoW is good, I remember I played on actually Blizz servers instead of private servers(200+ hours on them lol) cause my friend gave me his account to pay(basically he was paying my fee to let me play) and it was really cool, game is fun to go quest around and stuff with friends/guildmates

I attempted to play the trial...got sent on several monotonous quests and gave up. It wasn't really THAT bad per se, but it just wasn't my type of game. I don't like fantasy games typically.

I play WoW too, I have a level 80 undead holy priest and a 75 undead rogue. The game is pretty fun but the only reason i play it is because i have a bunch of friends who i went too high school with that play. And theres no other really good game for pc that has really caught my interest.

Actually if there's one thing I've got to give to WoW it's that (from what I've heard) it has the best customer service around. Constant patches and updates, plenty of places to go to get issues resolved and even people playing in-game you can go to if you're having some sort of problem. I certainly don't like the game but if there's one thing I've got to give them credit for, it's that.

i think the main negative thing about WoW is the stereotype that we found in that South Park episode.  i don't want to try WoW because it's not exactly the type of game i want to get associated with, and definitely not the type of game i like.

an MMORPG?  maybe.  a fantasy one that charges $15 a month?  no thanks.

Never got into it. Never will.

I like owning my games fully after paying ~$100ish, instead of whatever amount they charge for a months play.

Plus because of the stereotypes, etc. And no time anymore. But.. there's always time for CoD4/5.

I can think of a lot of reasons why it would be a worse place...

Just let them play their game, it keeps them from bothering me.

I agree to some extend with swinub, but for different reasons.

Don´t get me wrong, I love bandwaggon-bashing things just like the next guy, but I believe (apart from all the prejudices) WoW is a serious issue for modern society.
I know, like with all things, most of the players arn´t 14yr old fucktards who can´t cope with real life. They are responsible people, going to work, taking care of their family etc.
But, the amount of people spending more and more time gaming and less time in rl is increasing. It´s not WoW´s fault, if Blizzard didn´t create it, some other developer would have. It´s our society that breeds the agars for this. It´s easier to flee into some fantasy world and be a hero there than getting good grades in statistics classes on college. Especially if you get positive feedback from like-minded people, like how awesome your new sword is!
Back in my days, that feedback came for having the newest nikes or powerrangers action figures. But those things were bounded into reality, not the virtual one.

It´s a general problem to some extend. we drift into a habit of doing lesser things for extending periods of time. Workaholics do the same. It´s this general development that frightens me.

Uhhh I just think it's bad videogame and that it encourages devs to have more grinding in their games. I'm pretty sure it's not going to bring the world to a standstill.
