My computer freezes often

Hey there,

I've just a quick question.
My computer freezes very often a day since I got my new graphic card.

Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
2 GB of RAM
550 Watt PSU
GeForce 8600 GTS
MSI K8N SLi

After changing the PSU nothing happened.
My computer still freezes

What mobo? What PSU?

Always post your full specs. This is like going to a random car dealer and saying "Hey, my Mazda is broken, could you fix it?", and then expecting them to fix it. I can't enforce it enough.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

and a few coolers for my case.

Well, there are two problems there:

The first is MSI.
The other is (cheapo psu).

MSI board, especially older ones, are notorious for being unstable and unreliable. K8N/K9N are in many cases just horrid.

However, if it's only after installing the new card, I would suspect the PSU.

Well, I'll just try to get a new PSU.
I think 550 Watt can handle it.

reformat? new computer? Get latest GFX drivers make sure you uninstalled the old ones from the old card

just to be sure... run memtest. nForces are notorious for having freezing issues I have had 4 nForce boards with this issue. If the freezing issue is in games check out the temperature of your graphics card with Rivatuner while you are gaming.

Also... ppl who don't have had a nForce 4 SLi chipset board will find this question irrelevant.. but... do you have Creative sound card?

Ram. Take one stick out and try. Take another stick out and put the first one back in and retry if it still freezes.

Are your sticks of ram two 1gb, one 2gb or two 512mb and 1 gb?

Make sure your ram is the size size if using separate sticks.

Now that I remember... if the graphics card heats up the chipset of the motherboard, it might cause freezing. I would like to know all load temps you have. nForces run very hot even without graphics card heating them...

nope it's a Realtek AC'97 onboard.

download furmark and prime95

put coretemp on and run prime95 and wait and see how high your load temps go. do same with rivatuner and furmark.

for saying I want to see your load temps I ment 100% load.

temps are good so overheating is not the problem.

I thought about getting:

AMD Athlon X2 6000+
new 2 GB Ram.
a new cpu cooler
and a new mainboard (maybe Asus)

That's all I can get for my money atm.

What are your thought about this ?

hmm ur problem is as hard to trace as my nforce issues were... I never managed to get rid of this freezing issue myself...

what is your budget?

edit: btw you need to run the memtest for hours. the longer the better.
