Yep, it thinks it's a Dell mass storage USB device.

Fair enough, it's a Dell HD, but it isn't USB lol. And it doesn't show in My Computer.

Vista?

If so;

After you have installed a new hard disk, your computer should recognize the new disk if you have installed it correctly. When you turn on your computer, the basic input/output system (BIOS) should automatically detect the new hard disk.

If you plan to use the new hard disk as the primary partition that contains Windows, then you will have to install Windows on the disk before you can use your computer. You will need a Windows Vista installation disc to do this. For more information, search Help and Support for "Installing and reinstalling Windows."

If you plan to use the new hard disk as a secondary disk (one that does not contain Windows), you should be able to see the new hard disk drive the next time you start your computer and log on to Windows. After Windows starts, click the Start button Picture of the Start button, click Computer, and then look for your new drive in the Computer folder. The letter assigned to the drive will depend on your computer’s configuration. If you don't see the new hard disk drive, try looking for it in Computer Management.

1.

Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Computer Management.‌ Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2.

In the Navigation pane, under Storage, click Disk Management, and then look for the new drive.

You will probably have to format the hard disk before you can use it. For instructions, see Formatting disks and drives. Follow these same instructions to format an old hard disk that contains data you want to erase.

How to install a hard drive in Windows XP

1. Follow the manufacturers instructions and install the physical disk in your computer.

2. Boot your computer into Windows XP.

3. Windows XP should recognize that you have added additional hardware and display a new hardware ballon near your system clock.

4. Open Disk Management in Windows XP. From the Desktop or Start Menu, right click on My Computer and select Manage. This will open the Computer Management window. Click on Storage and select Disk Management. (image)

5. Initialize the new drive. Windows XP may launch the Partition Wizard to initialize the new drive. If so, skip ahead to the Partition Wizard step below. If not, right click on the new drive (it will be detailed as 'Not Initialized' and show a black bar to the right of it's properties) and select Initialize. This will prepare the new drive to be used by Windows. A simple wizard will be displayed to confirm your selection.

6. Right click on the drive's listing and select Partition. Follow the Partition wizard to finish the install process. The wizard will prompt you for several responses (image 1, image 2)prior to creating the partition.

7. Finished! Once the drive has been initialized, partitioned, and formatted it will display as a healthy drive with the size and type of partition below the volume name and drive letter (image).

Check the connections again. Take out the card and put it back in again after turning the power off, etc as you normally do.

can you give us other specs? It's unlikely but your psu might not be strong enough if it's a crappy pc used for storage only.

I'll assume you mean it only shows Disk 0 down the bottom, and you aren't reading the list of volumes (partitions) up top.

So wait, you've added an internal SATA drive?

And it shows up in Device Manager as a USB Mass Storage?

Wtf? Is that a BIOS thing or what?

Edit: Guys: SATA. No Slave/Master. The only jumper nowadays (if any) rolls it back to 1.5Gbps for compat with shitold boards.
