okay i looked at both of those links.  i see both the Vista drive and the XP drive BUT the Vista drive has no filesystem (either FAT or NTFS).  according to CrazeD's link, you can only mount one or the other.  mine is nothing?....sigh
Hmm It was probably NTFS in the first place. Try that.

If it doesn't work, then try an enclosure, but you may have lost your data if no file system is showing up

The device '/dev/sda' doesn't have a valid NTFS.  Shit.

Well I was looking around and there are ways to recover data, but they're DOS-based, which I can't do if the drive doesn't even work in Windows.

Pretty much every recovery tool is a bootable application.

Recuva is a good one.

Well right now the drive doesn't really show up in any OS, so I'm not quite there yet...

That doesn't mean it won't show up to a recovery tool.

Try SpinRite or HDD regenerator too.

But I can't boot into XP with the drive plugged in alongside the boot drive.

So? They're bootable programs. You download, and burn to a disc or USB drive, then boot off it.

Actually, I recommend you torrent Hiren's Boot CD. It has a bunch of shit like recovery tools and HDD diagnostic stuff all in one bootable ISO. You can find it on thepiratebay. I think 9.5 is one of the latest.

Ohhh.  Damnit, now I have to install a torrent program on this other computer...

I'll give it a shot though.  Hiren's Boot CD's recovery tool is just as good as the others?

Hiren's boot CD is not a recovery tool in its own right, it is a collection of a shitload of other utilities. For instance, it has recovery tools, backup tools, diagnostic tools, partition tools, monitoring tools, etc. A shitload of programs all in one nice little CD and a nice little menu. I highly recommend it, great resource to have.

Trying a XP repair quickly then if that doesn't work I'm going to boot into this CD.

Tried DiskCommander - it wanted somewhere to put the files (naturally) but the 100GB XP disk wasn't showing up.  I'm trying TestDisk now.

Try SpinRite. I've heard awesome things about that.

Okay I'm going to see if I can find that.

Edit: Umm, I have to install it.  I can only use bootable programs right now.

Did you download Hiren's boot CD? on TPB it said it included a bootable live xp environment. Did you try booting into that with your faulty drive plugged in too? (might work differently)

I did, but I didn't know that was on there.  Right now I am recovering the drive with a program from that boot CD but it's taking FOREVER.  At this rate I think it'll be done by tomorrow night.

Okay I was able to use SpinRite with Josh's suggestion of the Mini XP boot.  It seems to be a lot faster than other programs so I hope it's doing its job!

....Or else...

Recovery programs take a fucking long time, just let them work.

It finished.  It only shows all the sectors as "Processed" with no "Recovered" or "Unrecovered" sectors.  Don't know what that means as they don't have any SpinRite v6 documentation on their website.
