the price of those rams is pretty nice already. They can't drop down much so he might save the shipping costs of the another 2GB by getting them now. Looks like the 4GB does fit in his budget.

Yeah well I was just thinking that if he saved those he could allways upgrade something else... because those two last gigabytes will be idling

Nope, he should be able to take use of almost 3GB's

2Gb + 1Gb video = 3Gb

I thought the cap. on 32 bit was 3-3½Gb

Cap is 4GB. How much can be utilized depends on hardware. In this case the GPU will take 1GB and rest of the hardware something. So maybe 2.8GB will be usable.

Pretty much nothing uses over 3GB on XP anyway so 4GB should do well...

Still I think he should either go 64 bit or hold off those last 2 gigs since 2gb is pretty good aswell

I agree on the 64-bit part, but holding is pretty pointless. I really doubt DDR2 will get any cheaper anymore, and having 4GB is not going to do harm at the moment and will be there when he decides to eventually move to 64-bit.

Video memory doesn't seem to have a correlation, but a newer card will take more.

I for instance have a 8800GTS 640, yet I can still access 3582MB (quite lucky). 4096 - 3582 = 514MB lost.

It's not an exact science, but take DU as truth.

Sisco, the only thing I would change is perhaps the CPU cooler (Freezer 7 Pro, perhaps? Seems what everyone else here has) so you can save a few euro there. Then change out the DVD drive for the LG GH22. It's also a 22x DVD burner and will be cheaper than the Samsung by a few euro. The HDD I would personally change to a Seagate Barracuda 1TB, but that's just me.

So guys, I was planing on getting Vista 64bit.
I have a vista key under my laptop that I don´t use, cause I chose XP for it (long story). The key should work with the 64 bit version of vista home premium too if it was intended for the 32bit version, shouldn´t it?

I thought I get the 4 gigs now, cause the price seems right and it saves me the shipping later on. Plus, if I should get a new card somewhere in the not so distant future it might come in handy.
Or for Windows 7 *wink*

I was thinking about the F7P Cooler Nismo, but I chose the other one because the page didn´t show the sound volume it produces, since I was looking for a rather silent system.
THe LG burner actually costs 2€ more than the samsung one over at alternate. So all in all I´d save around 4-6€.
I´ll have to google the F7P to find out its volume. Or can anyone around here tell me how loud it is?

Gotta go to bed now, work in the morning

Thanks to all of you so far for the great input! Karmaz going round tomorrow!!

I've got it, it's quiet.

At least I can't hear it over my cheap case fans which are louder than <insert interesting funny and slightly sexual metaphor here>

No, the serial keys for 32bit are not the same as the 64bit versions! I am 99% certain of that...

I'm not sure about that, when you buy retail vista (as opposed to OEM) you get both the 64 bit disks and the 32 bit (i don't know if you get 2 keys, but i would doubt it). So it might actually work.

I don't know myself because I don't waste my money on non-oem versions of windows operating systems tbh

The OS that comes with Laptops is allways OEM, hence he cannot upgrade it to 64bit since it is an OEM key

If you are right, then most likely that works with one key because there are two types of keys, "full version" keys and oem keys that only work with the xxbit version they are sold as... because I know for sure that XP pro 32bit enterprise edition does not include the 64bit version and the same applies to my OEM MediaCenterEdition, but it is OEM and that is why

It's very silent, in a P182 () I just hear a small whur, my case fans make more noise than the cooler, and even that's quiet.

loudest fan = 9800GT stock fan.  Sounds terrible on 100% cooling...

but about the keys then.... you could be right about the difference between OEM and Retail - the only proper solution is for him to try it and report back, tbh And since he can enter the key during the install, not too much time wasted The only other thing might be activating Vista using the old key on the new hardware Meh, still worth a try

Just call MS and say your motherboard broke, they should re-enable your OEM key for the "new motherboard"

Yeah, not only with alternate. Mostly it´s due to the different sales taxes, but the german one should be cheaper then.lol. It´s just 2 euros anyway

I "aquire" a 64 bit Vista and see if it works with my key. If not, I try calling Microsoft. I´ll let you guys know if it worked.
