My google fu didn't come up with any articles/insight.

My 8800GTX is starting to show a bit o' age and I'm thinking about the GTX260/280. I understand PCI-E2 is backwards compatible, but I can't imagine the performance is

Yes it does work, and the bandwidth of PCI-E 1.0 X16 is enough for pretty much any card at the moment. You will not get any noticeable performance decrease. The question is, what CPU do you have, as in will it be bottlenecking?

8800GTX is G80, 8800GT is G92. G80 is still PCI-E 1.0.

GTX 260/280 will work just fine on every PCI-E 1.0 mobo with exception of VIA chipset motherboards with PCI-E 1.0a. The performance hit is very very small and definately not noticable.

AMD Dual Core 185 Opeteron @ 2.6Ghz attached to an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium.

Getting pretty close to end of life for this machine, trying to squeeze another 9-12 months out of it.

I'd go with a 4850 for that, your CPU isn't gonna let you use a 260/80 to it's full potential.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Any performance gains from that over a GTX 260 will be lost on an Opty.

EDIT: Oh look, Freezer beat me too it. And he makes a good point, I'd stick with the 4850. You can pick them up for ~130euros.

Many people are upgrading from 8800GT to 4850, and 8800GT is about as fast as the GTX. Would still present a considerable upgrade.

The monitors I have are only 1280x1024 and I won't likely be upgrading those for a bit.

Also, I'm kind of an nvidia fanboi.
