If you buy an Alienware, you pay 1/2 the price towards having "Alienware" written on the case.... get custom.

Custom.

There is a reason why custom wins out... no proprietary shit.

The only thing I want from alienware is their case, but they do not sell it. I even went to ebay to look for one.

I want the case as well, i also tried on ebay. Part of me wants to buy one with lower end specs for a back up comp and just switch cases but even then its expensive as shit.

If I were stupid rich I'd put several systems together - the main benefit to buying something like Alienware is that they've done a lot of the hard work for you - researching and testing which combinations of components are most compatible and perform the best - so, I'd put several systems together - trying different combinations, keep the one that worked the best, sell the rest.

If I had to recommend a pre-built source for a gaming desktop, it would probably be Digital Storm. You're obviously paying more than you would on a custom build, but it's still a better deal than I've seen from AW. I was very close to getting one last fall when I was too buried in work to risk musical RMAing, but I decided to hold out for some parts.

They're a bit behind on the laptop I'd go for, though (Mobility 3870? Where's the 4000's?).

i thought building a pc would be pretty hard, and only hardcore geeks like freezer n max ( <3 ) could do it.

bt its actually pretty easy, the only trouble i had was a doa psu

Holy old topic batman.

Alienware is shit for desktops, but the laptops they have are actually quite fucking beastly.

Bad unnamednewbie13, I think everyone would have been ok with new thread.

OTH, build one.

Edit: LOL at the Computer spec at the beginning of the thread, 3yrs ago that shit was hard core, now, people giving that stuff to max to fold.

What a load of shit that is.

EDIT: And I want to know these 30 components they're talking about. Not happening.

Sticky subtopic is sticky. Plus it's still a valid topic: pre-built or custom.

Sue me.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of 30 bits for even an obscenely extravagant build, unless they're including cables...

Sorta relavent to this- where would you buy a good quality gaming laptop from, if you were to buy one?

Dell don't seem to have particularly good GFX in theirs, but alienware's are... meh

(i'm going to need one for uni next year, i'm still not sure whether to get a netbook + gaming desktop or just an awsm laptop)

Alienware makes very good laptops, and for cheap considering.

Otherwise, check out the ASUS M7 series, they're quite good.

Netbook and gaming desktop... Good god dont go for a gaming laptop for college. Theyre heavy and a bitch to take around after a while, usually unspectacular battery life, and mostly impossible to upgrade. Also big
