what are you trying to do?  maybe i need more background, but what is your uni doing that you think this will help you with?  trying to get around their firewall?

yep, no idea what ports they allow, but eve, xfire, and a host of other things won't work.

so by using this program, it tunnels something or other and gets me around the port restriction i think

first things first, you need to port scan your school network from an outside host to see what actual ports are open...  then you can go about the business of re-mapping ports.  also, you need to make sure you can send outbound traffic on the proper port... or the host will need to change their port settings (which is unlikely.)  for example, xfire will only accept connections on a certain port, and if you can't connect (outgoing) to that port from your system, then there is nothing you can do to circumvent that.

but beware, if they have a stateful packet inspection filter, they can still determine your traffic type and you could get in trouble.

They might also have a content scanning packet management system, which calculates data based on a blacklist, so you could run it through port 80 and it would make no difference.

not really.  they both examine the header of a packet and determine what type of traffic it is from a pre-determined set of rules.  the curtains might be different, but the function is the same.

there is very little you can do

you obviously do not know what you are doing and they have people working for them that do know what they are doing

you will end up getting in trouble/fined or kicked out of school.

Not quite, content scanning management systems dont determine what type of traffic a packet is, they simple block access to certain places. For example Port 80 is http port, and there will be a big blacklist of websites etc that arent allowed. it will check the header of the packet for an ip address and then it will reverse DNS the ip address to determine what URL it is, and check that against a list. ofcourse the better ones will do this as you add the ip to the list, saving time and increasing efficiency.
