40c increase in CPU temps when using W7

So when I used to run XP, my temps never really ran over 50 and usually stuck at 40 even when on load.

This afternoon, I noticed something like artifacts on my PC which really worried me (Microsoft net framework or something stop responding and everything went into really weird colours) Anyway, I rebooted and checked Bios, finding that my CPU's temp was 86.

Is my CPU dying? Average RPM on fan was 3000. Should I invest in a new CPU or go with water cooling?

I'm using a AMD 6000+ by the way.

Then it's definitely hardware. Either your cpu cooler has failed/become dislodged, or your cpu has died. Check the seating on the cooler, replace it if you have a spare, redo the thermal paste if possible etc.

OK, it's not just Win7 then.

First thing to check is whether the CPU heatsink is clogged with dust...

Also, does the fan on the CPU heatsink appear to be spinning smoothly?

It is possible the cooler has moved a bit and the layer of thermal paste has got fucked up. Or simply a failure of thermal sensor in the CPU/Mobo.

Clean the fan and heatsink if its dusty.

Make sure the fan is spinning like already suggested.

If BIOS already shows idle temps of 86c... I think you wouldn't be here typing that if those were correct temps..... It would hit thermal limit of the CPU and get automated shutdown...

Isn't the whole emergancy shut down thing BASED off those sensors though?

As in the fact that its not causing a shut down doesn't mean faulty sensor because the same sensor is used to determine when its running to hot for the emergency shut down?

Now I don't understand what u jsut said.

If the sensor would be ok and BIOS is showing it right and he has idle temps of 86c, he would get emergency shutdown before booting to OS...

I need to know his temps in OS with Coretemp.

edit: I think his BIOS might be showing the temps wrong and cpu itself still has working sensor.

Okay, I'm about to open her up and try removing any dust from the CPU (It's been 1 1/2 years, so I'm guessing it's very dusty in the heatsink)

If that doesn't work, I'll have a look and see if the thermal paste need reapplying.

The CPU paste almost flakes away with my fingers, so I guess a combination of dust and poor thermal paste is the problem.
