I'm thinkin of upgrading to two SATA drives finally...I was thinking of just two WD's around the 200-500 gig range. But sometimes the 1TB are cheaper...Anyway, I was looking at:

THIS

To be honest with you guys, I could use some help here. I just kinda figure these WD's are all very similar so it doesn't really matter...What really sets HDD's apart anyway?

And if I do get two sata's, do I need to do RAID configs? Are there any good online tutorials on the benefits/installation of RAID HDD's?

Seriously, +1 for any help.
for only $20 or so more you can get a 1TB drive.  i don't know too much about platters but this is my understanding.  each drive has a number of "platters."  each of the platters holds a certain amount.  so say you have a 200 GB drive with 4 platters.  i think each platter holds 50 GB.  i could be wrong here so ask someone else before you take that piece of info.
You're right about that. Ideally you'd want as few platters as possible. The more platters you have in your drive, the more vibration, and consequently the more noise you'll get from your drive. Platter density also affects performance. If you have a 500GiB drive with one platter, you're going to be able to access twice as much data per revolution as you could with a double platter solution, as the platters are all the same size physically, but each platter on the double platter drive only hold 250GiB, giving you half the data density. Some drives make up for this by using multiple drive heads and writing dynamically across platters in a layered array, but even then, the added vibration of having several platters in a single drive negatively affects drive performance considerably.

Thanks Haffey, and mikkel. So, basically, the less platters, the better performance, reliability and quietness of the drive?

And, the Cache speed affects the performance (Load times etc) right?

Yep. The ones you can get off of thinkgeek are pretty good.
thanks. Next time I am back home in the States I'll be sure to order one.
You should get something that just plugs into the outlet. The power you can suck from USB is a mere 2.5W max. Quite a risk of setting off the fuses for your USB ports with a heater.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

No real risks associated. These things draw safe currents over USB, and plug into the wall with a regular old +5VDC adapter, should you need more heat.

i would buy one, but they're a bit too expensive, i'll get a 1tb instead
I turns out that backing up 1tb of data is kinda a pain.

incremental backups + high compression + acronis = easy tbh

In my situation, i have about 300 GB of stuff now, and 2 x 250 GB drives, so i'll move most of it onto the 1TB and slowly fill it up (while compressing it loads) and then replace my 250GB drives when i run out of backup space. Or alternatively only back up the useful stuff

eek.  i have two 250 GB Seagates, but they're fine and i'm very very glad for that.  good thing my 1 TB drive happens to be a Samsung.

Given the Chinese quality of most things like that, I wouldn't trust'em. Setting a USB fuse off can be awesome, as they can take hours to reset.

Yeah, big regrets about RAID 0'ing my 250GB WDs. Especially when one failed. If you're going big, I recommend RAID1 or RAID5 and no less.

Well considering my build won't be for another ... oooh ... 9 months at least? I HOPE that the problems have been worked and Seagate will step up and get rid of the baddies on the market. But I may end up switching teams to WD or Samsung.

I have close to 3TB of data but I would never buy a drive larger than 750GB.

I have two copies of everything, one copy on DVD and one copy on a hard drive

Well i have 2x1TB Samsungs and the are All the info on them is also shared between several friends so no backing up is required.

Samsung hdd's are the shit in my opinion. Won't buy anything else unless Seagate/WD proves they are worth my money. So hopefully Samsung will release 2TB hdd's soon.

I currently have 2x750GB 1x500GB and 1x250GB.

I had everything installed in my fileserver, and then I found out that my PSU only had 2 SATA power connectors D:
