I originally had that RAM in my computer, 2 gigs was alright but I decided to get another 2 just in case I ever upgrade from my 32 bit os to a 64 bit. I put the new 2 gigs in as well and not I have 4x1gb in there. I checked the system and it recognized 2.75 GB which was strange. I expected 3 gb because I have a 4870 1GB. CPU-Z sees all 4 gigs which Is good but I was playing a game and after a bit of time I got a BSOD and my computer crashed, obviously the new RAM. So I just tried again but the next time when I was playing it just crashed and my monitor didn't see the computer but all the fans were spinning at full speed so I had to manually shut it down.

I took them out and went back to my 2 gigs and everything was fine but I was wondering what Is going on. I have the 4 gigs in right now and its been going well but I havent played a game yet so I cant be sure. I figure its bad ram so I need a memtest but the one I tired didn't make sense to me so I was wondering if anyone could help

Fuck that turned out longer than I thought it would

Also, what does the 4870 have to do with your RAM?

I think i was told that 32 bit os only see 4 GB of your total memory from video cards and RAM

correct.  Take my system for example, in xp i get 3.25 gig with a 512 card so you getting 2.75 makes sense.  the other .25 gig is taken by some other hardware.

Yeah, that's what I was saying, I expected the computer to see 3 gb because of my 1gb video card but the missing .25 freaked me out

Thats all

Windows takes around 512MB for addressing space, then ontop of that you lose roughly the amount your video card takes up.

The more VRAM, the less system RAM.

that makes no sense, because it's not shared.  i know it's still used by the system but they should just...make it not happen.

The memory limit on 32 bit accounts for ALL memory, not just system memory. Video memory is counted as well.

Well looks like I will have to acquire 64 bit vista for my new rig so I will be able to use all 4.5gigs of memory that my system will have. (4 gigs ram 512 on the GPU)
