- whats the advantage of getting patches and badges?
because its fun
it's like getting a star on your 3rd grade math homework, yeah, you passed, but the star gives you something to go brag to mommy about......... so to speak
Personally I get patches to be able to play on servers
and
badges because I do stuff, they tend to appear sometimes - not too often for them to be annoying though

i think by saying patches he meant "Ribbons" lol
Which is the sole reason for the after the sentence
I get badges and ribbons because they are acheivements. I can say I have the Veteran Command Badge or the Staff Officer Ribbon. It has no affect on the game itself.
for preference in becoming the commander
I think a nice side to them is the fact, when trying to get some badge/ribbon you need to try different things that you would probably not tried without an incentive. Especially going for the veteran combat badges introduced the kits in a good way. Ribbons come more as a surprise.
Gives you a goal, something to strive for. Also, the time requirements help you to see the benefit of all aspects of the game. All-in-all, it really rounds you out as a player, which really helps you to do better.
When I first the played, I was like most, a noob-tuber. Played lots of a assualt and noobed alot of people. Then I tried Medic. Medic was cool, stat-whored for a short while, but didn't like it. Tried actually playing the class, lots of fun. Then I tried Sniper. Didn't like sniper, moved onto spec ops. Fell in love. Got my first badge. Went back and got badge for assault and medic, cake. Then I tried support. Kinda hard, but I got better and got the badge. Then I tried neer. Harder, but did it. Then I tried anti tank. Fell in love again. Started cheating on spec ops with anti-tank. After a long stint of anti-tank, went for sniper. Got it.
Then I determined that all that work for the awards had made me a better player. So I started working for each one.

The badges also are required for some of the ranks (First Sergeant, Sergeant Major, Brigadier General, and Major General). Check out UBAR for the details. These special ranks are goals you can strive for too. I personally am going to try to get all the badges\ribbons that are offer in BF2\BF2:SF.
I agree with Elamdri's statement about how the badge\ribbons help round out players too.
