Ok so im planning a lan in the next week or so only going to have 4 people (so we can try out some nazi zombies )
and my router at home only has 4 ports, 2 are being used, on by me and the other by my mum and sister. this only leaves 2 left, so either someone is going to miss out or there is another solution.
so i was thinking, one of my friends who should be attending has a 4 port network switch, would we be able to plug this into the router? and still be able to lan and have internet? i have a picture that i drew

(woo for paint)

Yes. Remember of course that a port will be taken up by switch <-> router cable, so you will have no free ports.

Try it all up, in theory it should work. But test it before you go to the event.

That's exactly what a switch is for.

I don't think network traffic will have to go through your original router(the router-switch cable might be a bottleneck if you go online, but not on a lan) the switch handles all the connections, and just pulls IP's from the router.

I very much doubt four guys will max out a 10/100 link playing games. Broadband connections, Australian broadband connections can handle multiple players.

Just to be sure however, make one of the three host it.

yeah i have 1.5/256 it should be fine, and do you mean host as in like hosting the server? the people on the switch ? or on the router? i guess it would depend on computer power, quadcore be better over dual for hosting/playing at same time

Fastest computer always hosts. That'll learn him for spending money on his hobby.
