My dad just left to go buy a pre-built. Do I have to shoot him in the face now that he's one of them?

Buy him vodka, steal his valet, go buy a PC, if hes unhappy with your actions get him drunk again and repeat the process if no success.

No listen, if you don't know your way around PC and he doesn't either and none of your buddys has a clue about PCs too then its the right thing to buy a pre-built PC. If something gets screwed up, the easiest thing is to take it back and let them "play" with it.

oh dear god i know that feeling... its even gotten to the point if my parents dont bother to ask me beforehand on buying tech i will refuse to help them when it goes wrong and then they can pay the service fee...  and I don't feel guilty when they pay too much for something... in fact i smile i a little.

Aww, that sucks, my dad needed a work computer, so I recommended some parts for him and he went to the best electronics store, chose the parts and they build it for him for free.

I wanted to build it though .

All computer related purchases in the house are left up to me, my Dad just comes with to pay for it all.

Same^

It's the same everywhere I go, except for my brother, he comes to me for his PCs. Work just go for the cheapest prebuit they can get, which usually dies in under a year instead of paying the extra £80 for the custom build that'd last 3 years, and my dad just buys shit, I can understand why though, his missus is a total retard, she can wreck a pc in under 5 mins no matter how good it is.

Limited at times. We computer savvy people often forget about the fact that not everyone wants to be thier own tech support. If someone is just using a computer for basic internet/home use I'll recommend a prebuilt (never from a brick and mortar store). It is sometimes even more cost effective. If they are looking for performance I will of course offer my services .

What a bastard. He went and spent £200 over his origional budget and got something half decent.

Q8200, 4GB DDR2 800Mhz, 750GB 7,200rpm HDD, AOC 20" monitor, and some shitty onboard graphics.

So not that bad I suppose.. Just needs a graphics card..

Also, he thinks his is better stock than mine is overclocked, which I find funny. (Since SuperPi only runs on one core, my 3.6 > his 2.8)

EDIT: Sp.

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

You kinda have to take into account that some people just want to buy a PC, take it home and for it to work, no fucking about. Not everyone is an enthusiast. Granted there is certain horror in buying pre-built, but it's just easier for some people!

My thoughts exactly.

It's too easy to forget that sometimes people could give a shit less if their computer has 2GB of memory or 3GB, they just want to get back to their (pathetic ) social lives on MySpace/Facebook.

I had two friends buy pre-builts (one got an HP and the other got an Acer) around Christmas time ('08), I told them if they bought parts I would build it for them, both were too damn stubborn.  Then again, both of them don't even know how to install RAM or a GPU.

So, I have a friend who plays BF2 on propriety HP hardware, locked BIOS, and a 9600GT that he had his brother install (so long, HP warranty ).  The other plays WoW on an Acer desktop.  Garbage, I know, but he was playing WoW on his iBook G4 prior to this new Pc, he has over 1000 hours logged in WoW, most of the time he wouldn't get over 20FPS.

I have weird friends, I guess.

my 10 day old computer that i got from ibuypower broke. Something is wrong with the power supply and he wont let me touch it. On Tuesday im calling them. We got a dell paper in the mail about some gaming pcs. He says man you should have got this it would still be working. Then i told him to look at price and what i had was better than dell. AND my cost like $600 less than dell.
