Hey guys, just got my new computer and was thinking of overclocking my E8400.  I have 4 120MM fans in my case, will temperature be a problem??
Here is my normal temperature without running anything except Firefox.

and here is on Cod4

Follow a guide, do it in little bits, and let it run for a couple hours after __ level of OC. Soon as the OS starts crashing, you're done. If you get a better CPU cooler, you can push the voltage and go more.

You could safely OC to 3.6 Ghz with those temps.  Just bump the FSB up to 400 Mhz and you're there.  If you want to go beyond that, you should probably look into getting a better cooler.  According to this guide, temps start to skyrocket once you get over 3.6 Ghz with the stock cooler.

Stock cooler = fail

u can get a small overclock out of them (3.6 would be absolute max imo)

however if you want to do some decent overclocking buy a OCZ vendetta 2, Thermalright Ultra 120 or similar.

How does one go about overclocking an E8400 on a P5Q Pro?  What setting should I mess with?

I have a F7P, so heat isn't much of issue, can't this thing run at like 4Ghz stable?

I haven't had the balls to mess with my CPU yet.

It can. Try putting 1.3Vcore at first and then start bumping FSB. Keep tracking the temps under load as well just to be sure.
You may also bumb the NB voltage a bit and make sure the FSB:RAM divider is good so that ur ram won't try to run at insane speeds.

edit: meh just add someone from tech team to xfire. overclocking is something that goes better if we help step by step...

this advice goes to all wanting to overclock. every cpu, motherboard & ram set overclocks differently and u do yourself a favor if u talk to someone from tech team in person via xfire.  That way you get best results.

Just take it step by step... 10mhz at a time.... im running 4ghz stable on only 1.28 vcore so each chip is different.... just remember any voltage over about 1.4-1.45 is getting alittle dangerous. not for pro overclockers but first time overclockers its a no go.

I'm running 4GHz on 1.4 vcore

It must be something else than the CPU tbh, if I tweak my RAM and mobo it I should be able to reach higher.

Lets see:

stock cooler:
try with a max of 1.3Vcore first. Anything more will probs overheat. Expect ~3.5GHz for 24/7

F7P:
should be enough for 1.4Vcore. Expect ~ 4GHz+ for 24/7

Concerning both
Use real temp for CPU temp measurements
Use LinX for stability testing

it's safer to go with crashing in stress tests/games since that happens a lot sooner than crashing in the OS.

/agree

When i did my failoverclock, it was fine in windows, but failed at stresstests, bf2 and fah

then i forgot to fix it and wondered why those things weren't working

OCCT is not a bad program for stresstesting. its quicker than some and has always done a good job for me.

LinX/linpack/intelburntest is the best and hardest stressing app for the CPU.
