Iceland's central bank said on Tuesday Russia had agreed to provide the country with loans of 4 billion euros ($5.4 billion).

Sedlabanki said in Icelandic on its website that the Russian ambassador to Iceland, Victor Tatarintsev, had informed Central Bank Governor David Oddsson on Tuesday that Russia would provide Iceland with the loan.

It said the loan would substantially strengthen Iceland's foreign reserves and support the Icelandic crown.

The central bank said the loans were for 3-4 years on terms that would be 30-50 points above Libor rates.

It said Iceland's Prime Minister Geir Haarde had begun investigating the possibilities of such a loan this summer and that experts from the Sedlabanki and the government would be going to Moscow shortly.

Oh also, I think we should publicly hang the Icelandic government, it has totally fucked up the country, it's corrupt to the core. Thousands of people are protesting down town, throwing eggs and shit at the senate.

Well it's not like most of the other so-called friendlier countries even have the money to do it, also it's not like there's any incentive to invest that much money into that wasteland that doesn't really have anything going for it. Much like here, but on a bigger scale. I'm guessing the only reason Russia is doing it, is because they can, and geopolitics.

Well it's a loan, so they have to worry about paying it back + the interest also.

Throwing it towards bad debt is just going to create more bad debt.

not really, the Russian ecnonomy is turning to shit, just look at the military, all they have is money to build the new T95 tanks, they can't even break free of soviet bombers, they just have concepts for their answer to the F22.

Military and Economic power don't go hand in hand, well maybe they do in your teenage video game mind. To say that Russia's economy isn't big because they don't have shiny toys like the USA, well it's abit misinformed really. Obviously they're not that rich, but they're quite rich, they're making money off their resources rather than the fake financial charade that countries like Iceland and the UK are doing, which is why we're practically bankrupt whilst they, although also hurting in this downturn, aren't hurting as bad. Because they still have tangeable goods/resources to trade with, rather than fake shit like bonds/loans and all that other financial nonsense that was never real. Just grown ups playing games.
