So im thinking of buying THIS ePc for school, so i can download crap onto their bandwith and play diablo 2 and HL1 (on a 7" screen bitches), and because its incredibly cheap, small, and i can just screw around with it, i am also doing a tertiery education course next year and a subject where we build our own PC's (two grand budget, we can buy em at the end of the year for 500 :>>>)

HOWEVER

I want to install a 'legal' version of xp pr0 on it, even though its linux, which is the devil in OS form.

would i be able to install the xp pro from a USB drive, like, boot from usb.

email ur reply back asap.

ALSO, is it possible to buy a new SSdrive, and replace the 4gb one that is in their be default, or should i just buy a new 8gb one and put it in the avaliable slot.

tech section is awesome, you guys have terrfic advice and you all are renowned for your knoledge, don't phayle me now.

Anything is possible. click me. Use nLite to slim down the install

I wouldn't try to replace the SSD, you're better off getting a big SDHC stick and using that for files.

eh whatever.  i have an acer monitor and i loved it so i decided to go with the AAO.  i'm loving it.

by the way, if you can, stretch to get the version with 1GB RAM, 6 cell battery, 120GB HDD (not SSD), and the 1.3MP webcam.

You CANNOT replace the SSD drive on the 701. It's soldered onto the board and is spread out.

My advice to you: buy a 900 with XP already on it. If you must have the 701, you can get those with XP on them, too. I own a 900 XP model and I love the hell out of it.

You DO NOT need to nLite the install, either. You can install a perfectly normal Windows XP onto the 4GB 701 and still have over 1GB free after installing Firefox and a few other programs. The only thing is you have to disable pagefile and a few other tricks, but if you buy it out of the box, it's great. Update Windows and then what you do is copy all the SoftwareDistribution files onto an external drive and store them there if you ever need to uninstall a service pack or some Windows Update. That also saves a lot of room.

If you are going to buy the 701, I would recommend getting an SDHC card. You cannot run the OS off it, but you can run other programs that don't write to the card often during basic use.

But seriously, buy the 900. The 8.9" screen is really as small as you can go with the resolution before it starts to get annoying. I tried the 701 alongside the 900 in a store before I bought mine and the extra space is worth it. If you go that direction, let me know and I will walk you through saving more space and moving stuff around to get the most out of your EEE.

That's my bit ...

The Acer Aspire One is a POS. That mousepad just pisses me off and I have not been impressed with Acer's quality control in their normal products. I am never buying Acer.

And DO NOT get an EEE PC with a normal HDD. What's the point of ultra mobility if you get a normal HDD that you have to worry about. I throw my EEE in my backpack and run between trains and do whatever and can do that with the machine running. Try doing that with a conventional HDD and see what happens. They all come with 1.3mp webcams, too. Unless you get the 900A, which only comes with a VGA came, IIRC.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Never have I had any problems with the mouse pad, every touch is well recognized.
I would suggest the opposite-SSD are way to small and are not performing well compared to other desktop intended SSDs. You will fill those 4,8 or 16 GB very fast, hell I have 120GBs and half is full already and I don't use it for storage. One has a webcam as well. Acreta I wrote a review on mine if you haven't seen it already.

Btw the netbook is still extremely portable, always holding it with one hand. Add extra grams but loads of GBs as well so weight is not really a handicap, right the opposite

I am not saying the extra weight is a handicap, far from it. I doubt the platters weigh enough to really make a significant difference. I mean, if I am sitting on the train and need to change lines, I can leave my EEE running, throw it in my bag if I am in a hurry and jog to the next connection. Get in the train, sit down and keep working without ever worrying about head crash.

The trackpad itself is fine. But the buttons are horrible ... ugh ...

The 4GB SLC drive in my 900 works like a charm. I'd like to change out the 8GB MLC miniPCI SSD out for a larger and faster one, though, but that is no where near a priority. I only use light programs on my machine, so space isn't an issue. I also have an 8GB USB stick for transfers. But what are you doing that you filled 60GB worth of data and you aren't storing files on there? What the hell are you doing with it?

I still say you need to come to Vienna and we need to have a shoot out ....

I need more HDD space than the SSD drives had to offer...

I have used both Acer and this 904HD EEE PC and I didn't like the smaller keyboard and touchpad of the Acer. So I got this Asus.

I've been to Graz like 4 times or so ... Just pick a weekend for Vienna, dude. Get a cheap flight or train ride. We need to go out and have our shoot out and then go out for beers.

Train is my best bet as I already went there by it and car ride consumes too much energy if I go there for a day or two only. Will let you know when I get some free time. My next vacation is reserved for skiing though.

storage is no problem of mine, all the stuff i save ill just save to my USB drive, or a 8gb SD card.

Can't you just hook it up to a PC, assign it a dvd drive, and voila?

you can't install an OS from a networked DVD drive
