This one guy, pdtecrj, had a bunch of videos of him playing Guitar Hero. They were up for ages, but recently his account was shut down apparently because of this copyright bullshit.

@Lt. Victim, same here. If it wasn't for YouTube, I may have never really listened to Dream Theater outside of what they have on Rock Band. But thanks to videos on YouTube, I listened to more of their stuff and ended up buying a few of their albums.

It's funny, the record companies think that by doing this, people will buy their shit. If anything this makes me more inclined to pirate stuff. Bethesda's exclusivity deals with MS for Fallout 3 sure as hell piss me off. Had I known they weren't gonna even let PS3 players keep playing the game post-story (the Broken Steel DLC will let PC and 360 users do so, but not PS3 users since the PS3 won't get DLC) I would have pirated the PC version.

Then perhaps the labels should post more samples of stuff on youtube.

go there and you can get enough official DT to know if you'd want to buy a record.

Youtube is a fantastic tool. I have a wealth of favorites that no doubt violate copyright. The unwritten rule is if the guy is still working and trying to make a living youtube will support requests by the artists to take the videos down. There are millions of obscure tunes on youtube. I guess its a fine line between wanting people to see your music and deserving to get paid when it is played.

Generally youtube doesn't remove something unless it's received complaints. GENERALLY.

I had a TF2 video that was taken down because I had "Can't Touch This" in the background lol.

Trent Reznor is pretty well off. I have a feeling that my videos were muted at request of his old record company (which he left anyway). All I know is these assholes can't hold on for long. One day they'll have to adapt to a new age of information sharing. Instead of casting away YouTube they should embrace it. Another example: had it not been for YouTube I likely would never have bought some of System of a Down's albums. I didn't want to keep loading the video for BYOB each time I wanted to hear it, so I got the entire album.

I wouldn't buy a car without testing it first, I wouldn't buy a house without checking it out first, so I sure won't buy an album without checking out some of the songs first. Sure I can go to artist sites, but YouTube makes it so much easier. "Give me convenience or give me death."

And in some cases, they have embraced the future of stuff by simply putting in ads or putting links to buy the songs on Amazon and iTunes:

I actually have rarely seen the in-video ads, but they should put more of those in. I'll take a 15-second ad at the bottom of the video player if it means being able to watch the videos I want.

Plus a lot of artists don't have any control of what their labels do. After all, the labels are the ones who own the music. I'm sure the artists are happy their music is being spread around and listened to, but when the money-grubbing label is in control of it, they have the final word.

They also muted two of my AudioSurf videos. Fucking hell. I wish those terrorists would for once attack the REAL infidels, AKA record companies.

Hm, I found a decent alternative for music videos. Seems like they're posted officialy by the bands. And the audio quality (as well as video quailty) outdoes YouTube:
