Go.

(the reason is, i currently have a Buffalo Linkstation Live 500 GB which has.... failed after about 3 months (the print server stopped working, and accessing the shares and web interface became erratic) and I want to replace it. If you think that Buffalo are awsm and I just got a crap one, fair enough, but I'd like to know so I can decide if i want to replace it with the same model or a different model/brand)

Also- If you can suggest a particular model of NAS, i'll give you karmaz

(must be available in the UK, 500GB, should really include a print server and a media server as that's what my old one did)

Just use an old PC. Cheaper, better performance. Doesn't need to be fancy, even an original Pentium will do
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

qft.

Although, I'd LOVE to find JUST the case from those HP Media Server PC's, like I've yet to find anyone that makes anything as hot as that.

And have you tried going to Buffalo to get it fixed under warranty?

yep, put together your own system.  it'll run better, you'll be more familiar with the setup, and you can make it run smoother than most pre-fabbed solutions.  print serving and media hosting are no sweat either...

It actually took me quite a few sweats to figure out how to get my printer installed and shared on Ubuntu Server, but I got it eventually.

Well - first imma get the NAS returned and replaced, but tbh for a 500GB NAS w/media server + print server, £110 wasn't all that bad, and if I were to make an old PC as a NAS, as I don't have any old PC's lying around, it'd probably be a bit more expensive as a 500GB HDD is £52, then i'd need case, mobo, ram cpu w/fan for £58 to make it worthwhile (and it's quite hard to buy outdated parts new, you can only really get like, cheap bad parts if you know what i mean), and as well, my NAS is only a bit bigger than an external HDD - but a PC that I would make myself would probably come to be a fair bit bigger, and probably a bit noisier too. (unless i used passive air cooling.... that would be kinda )

tl;dr NAS is convenient + small, PC is bigger, faster, and noisier

You get old PCs for free. And almost any old PC can be passively cooled without modification.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

An old PC would be too big

i need one that can fit in a case which isn't significantly larger than an external HDD enclosure, so it needs to be a microATX board, and plus I don't really know where to get old PC's from

although admittedly it would be very nice to have a home server thing, especially when I'm at Uni so I can download torrents on the box at home and then use a proxy (SSH?) so as not to piss off my uni

Ask your uni, or ask someone who does a computer related course at uni to ask the tech staff. They usually have more old shit lying around than they know what to do with.

It's called a "newspaper".

Just put in "Old PCs accepted for free, or bought for very cheap. Will pick up."
