My friend was looking to get a video card for his Dell inspiron.  He doesn' t do any gaming but he does like to mess around with the microsoft Flight sims.

What would be the best card for 100.00 or less that would do this?  I think he would preffer Nvidia.

I'm not up on the cards that are out now cuz I've got the 8800, so I haven't looked at the market for a while.

thanks for the help.... Karma to the helpers!

What are his current specs?

I think it's just an onboard video.  It's a new computer so I'm sure he's got at least 1 pci express open.

Helps to know the cpu and psu to work out what card he can handle, along with whether he'd also benefit from an upgrade in ram.

Well I know it's a dual core and he's running vista and he has 2 g mem.  Unfortunatly I'm not right next to him or the comp so details are sketchy.

Like I said it's a new comp.  He's not really computer savy so when he bought It he didn't have the flight sim and when I bought the game and loaded it, the onboard video wasn't enough.

I think a 9800gt 512mb would suite him, if it's a little expensive just a 8800gt as you have would be fine.

I wouldn't bother going much higher than a 9800gt for him on that budget.

I'm not sure those will work.  I know the cards are big and I don't think they will fit in the case.  I just barely fit it in mine.

Again, knowing the specs would make this a lot easier.

I suggested at least an 8 series but the 8400, 8500, 8600?

I'll see if I can get them tomorrow.

8600gt is the budget card.

What flight sim does he want to play? Does he want to play it with maxed out gfx?

I think he'd be happy just to run it.  I loaned him the 2004 microsoft flight sim, history of flight and he runs that fine, but he bought the newest one and it won't run.

If a 8800 wont fit because of dual slot cooling, theres plenty of single slot cooling 8800s available. As for the rest of the 8xxx line, go with nothing below an 8600 GT/S. The rest below them are TERRIBLE

I just talked to him on the phone.  He bought a 9500 gt with 1g mem.  The card requires a 350 psu but he only has a 300 so I told him he may be ok for just running the flight sim but to watch for artifacts and the watch the temp.

Try not to push it with the resolutions and gfx.

If he starts experiencing random shut downs and\or bsod then take the card out and upgrade the psu asap.

I've put 8800GT's and 4850's in my bros Dimension E520's and they fit no problem. You'll need to upgrade the PSU though (most likely).

The propriety Dell PSU's are garbage.

I fit a (single slot cooling) 9800GT & a StealthXStream into an Optiplex mid-tower, ran fine, and the card was as long as the motherboard.

But for just Flight Sims (and maybe the occasional racing game) the 9500GT should perform nicely.

4670 512MB would have been the best bet.

Also @ Aussie: 9800GT = 8800GT

I have a 4670, runs really cool and doesn't use much power

And at only £60 was a bargain. Shoulda gone with that. If his computer can't handle the 9500 then tell him to take it back and get the ATI HD4670.

hd4670 takes more power than the 9500gt

the difference is negligible but it will still be to much. Although the performance is way better then the 9500gt.
