Here is the situation,

A friend of mine was recently deployed and he brought his new laptop with him.

He asked me to send him some movies and tv shows etc

He is using windows vista and is NOT computer literate at all, he just knows the basics
like the power button.

The stuff I will be sending him is mostly in divx format or some variation, xvid with some AC3 audio etc

Do I need to send him a codec so he can watch them or what?
I know of the all in codec here
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Cod … l_In_1.htm

will that be enough or does he even need the codec since he is on vista?
( i dont have vista ) but I heard that vista installs stuff on its own.

Any info posted will be greatly appreciated.

I forget that not everyone has a background in computers and trying to explain this kind of stuff to someone who has only owned a computer for 6 months is impossible/frustrating.

simple terminology/shortcuts etc go right over their head.

I asked him what OS he had and he didnt know.

This... mother of all codec packs and solved all my issues I had with other packages. And yeah the Media Player Classic ROCKS compared to the new ones.

I recently got video files onto my Vista setup for the first time and had a similar predicament. I was directed to the Divx website that had several codecs available for download and it's worked wonderfully so far.
