Doesn't take a genius to figure out that, considering the type of people who like buying guns etc.. tend to also be very paranoid and have alot of fear around them (I'm going around what I've seen and heard, IRL and on internets), that simply provoking that fear will result in many more sales and much more $$$. I'd do it too, business is easy when customers are paranoid, gullible sorts, with money.

you need a different source of information then.

i would say the VERY minimum of firearm owners are like what you described.

gullible?

historically, the democrats have attacked gun ownership. naturally, people that want to own guns dont like this.

that doesnt make them paranoid, nor gullible.

So this is a thread that is two years early, just getting ready to buy a girly gun in a few years?

Yeah, basically except I think Derringers are cool.  I fail to see why people have such a problem with this.

21 to buy one. 18 to have one. You can be given a gun. I used to date a girl who was a cop for a couple of years. She started when she turned 18. Her mom had to buy the gun then give it to her as a gift. It was kinda a pain in the ass.

Old enough to know better than to buy a derringer.

They're underpowered, difficult to use properly, and almost as much of a danger to the owner as the target.

There are a number of good pistols for a first/only pistol.
Revolvers are remarkably simple to learn & maintain.
for a semi-auto, the old Browning Hipower with the factory issue black form-fitting grips is the most comfortable and easiest to learn on.  The grips are perfect for developing a repeatable "natural point of aim"

But.. if you're aware of their difficulties and still "just gotta get one 'cause it's.. cool", then in the USA it's 21 for pistols, 18 for rifles - and be able to pass a Federal backround check.

Unless you're a crazy, homicidal maniac.. then I suggest loading up a Super Soaker with gasoline, letting the gasoline "settle" for 24 hours next to your bed near a lit candle, then use it.
Spoiler (highlight to read):

Gasoline will eat through the super soaker's plastic in less than 24 hours...  With a happy ending for the homicidal maniac sleeping next to it

You can't legally use a handgun until you're 21. Try going to a shooting range where you can rent guns in between the age of 18-21. They won't let you use a hand gun there.
they will not rent you a hand gun if you are under 21   but in minnesota you are allowed to recieve a hand gun as a gift from a legal buyer and transport it and shoot it  as long as you do not have a criminal record that does not allow you to own firearms and it is cased and unloaded during transport..  as far as the range  my daughter was shooting my .40 when she was 16 with a range instructor present.

Apparently (from 2 internet sources...) Maryland's state laws prohibit handgun transfers to those under 21.  You're out of luck for another 5 years (unless you move to a different state).

P.S. Derringers aren't good for much except conversation pieces.
