Basically a couple days ago someone installed VLC media player on my laptop and now everytime it turns on or I do anything with it I get a message saying 'Com surrogate has stopped working' and it says it's due to a problem with Xvid. I assumed it was to do with the DIVX player so i uninstalled it and reinstalled a newer version only I think it's made the problem worse as now the 'Com Surrogate' message won't go away and keeps coming up even when I end the process.

I don't really know what to do, any suggestions?

Boot in safe mode. Do virus scans. If there are viruses delete them. Try doing a system restore too.

Try typing "com surrogate has stopped working vlc" into google and looking at any one of the hundreds of pages on the topic.  I really don't think it's a virus.

I've done this and tried probably most all of the suggestions on google but it keeps coming back up.
