BF2S Forums Rapist driven to Police by victim

Vipul Romik Sharma, 22, was found guilty in Auckland District Court last November of abduction and two counts of sexual violation by rape in February, 2006.

Yesterday he was jailed by Judge Phil Gittos who said his victim, 20 at the time, was not only devastated by the attack but was left with an infection.

After the attack Sharma became sleepy as he was driving and when he allowed his victim to drive he fell asleep and she drove him to the Auckland Central police station.

The victim met Sharma and his associate, Sukhvinder Singh, in an Auckland bar.

Both men abducted and raped the woman before Singh was dropped home and Sharma drove the victim back to the city. When she offered to drive, he fell asleep and she went to the police.

A pre-sentence report showed Sharma had no empathy for his victim, The New Zealand Herald reported.

Singh earlier pleaded guilty to his part in the rape and was jailed for 7-1/2 years.
