Right, so what I want to do is set up a Media sharing network between my PS3, the laptop and my PC. What I've managed to do is enable the PS3 to access the media in my PC and laptop, aswell as have my laptop be able to access the media on my PC. But for some reason I can't get my PC to access the data on my laptop.

That's from the PC, as you can see, I can only share my media, I can't access anyone elses. The option isn't even there. Whereas when I go to the same settings for the laptop, there is a setting there which allows me to access other peoples media.

Maybe it's cos the laptop is Vista and I'm on XP? We're both using WMP 11 and the PS3 can access it all as it has its own media server scanning function, and the laptop is enabled otherwise the PS3 wouldn't be able to connect to it. So I'm not quite sure why I can't even "scan for devices" on my XP PC.

Any help?

Preferably using WMP 11, I know if I just downloaded Tversity I could do it, but tbh I don't think it performs as well as WMP 11 does when it comes to sharing/streaming over the network.

You can share files in Vista (Windows File and Print Sharing) as well as media sharing (Windows Media Player Networking Sharing).

Make sure the former is on under Network Center.

By default a computer is invisible in Windows Networking if it's not sharing anything. Share a folder (right click it) first to do so.

i think windows gets a bad rap for file sharing.  it is sometimes very confusing, but it works if you know how to configure it correctly.  check out this link, there is some good info here -->

what "bugs" are there in XP file sharing?  its just a protocol, and it works fine.  i have never had any issues getting vista and xp to work properly.  i think people are quick to say its broken and buggy when in reality they just haven't configured it properly...  for example, most people don't realize vista uses NTLMv2 authentication out-of-the-box compared to XP using only NTLM.  if the vista machine is set to reject all authentication attempts except ntlmv2, then you will have some problems connecting the two... this is not a "bug," but in fact a simple security setting that can be changed on both machines to make them work.

Well you think wrong.

It breaks. It fails to recognise stuff after being configured correctly. You don't get this problem if you use AD, but XP filesharing is extremely buggy (not as buggy as doing anything with Samba on a Mac or with the piece of shit that is the Apple mail server).

I'm well aware of how NTLM works, I've also seen all sorts of horrible issues with filesharing across peer to peer networks with XP. I solve all these issues by just kerberising everything.

btw, do you use the MIT version of kerberos or the M$ version?  i've had a lot of issues with the MIT version.

Typically the MIT version. Usually on UNIX systems (or dirty Macs - which are much the same). Never had any major issues with it.

Is all your NTP stuff sorted properly? That seems to be the most common cause of kerberos problems.

well, there is a host of issues on our network here, and unfortunately i don't have to power to fix alot of the problems.  first off, our domain name for the active directory is not the same as the root DNS server, so that causes huge, huge, huge problems.  everything on the AD is supported with cname records, which causes a lot of latency and server not found errors... in fact, a lot of clients have issues finding the ntp servers, which probably causes the problems i'm having with the MIT realm.  for the time being, we are just kind of ignoring the kerb stuff and logging on right to AD, which isn't ideal, but the head network admin is retarded and doesn't understand wtf he's doing.  oh well, life goes on. /rant

Yeah, sounds like DNS issues are causing NTP issues, which are screwing up your kerberos.

Bad DNS always leads to horrible knock on effects.
