Steele takes the helm of a beleaguered Republican Party that is trying to recover after crushing defeats in November's national elections that gave Democrats control of Congress put Barack Obama in the White House.

He was also considered an outsider because he's not a member of the Republican National Committee. But the 168-member RNC clearly signaled it wanted a change after eight years of Bush largely dictating its every move as the party's standard-bearer.

Steele, an attorney, is a conservative, but he was considered the most moderate of the five candidates running.

Saltsman, who ran former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's failed presidential campaign last year, saw his bid falter in December after he drew controversy for mailing to committee members a CD that included a song titled "Barack the Magic Negro" by conservative comedian Paul Shanklin and sung to the music of "Puff, the Magic Dragon."
Sounds like the GOP only picked this guy because he's black. He's not even part of the RNC and was only given the job because of a misunderstanding over a joke song. He is only a moderate conservative too. Not conservative enough to run the party into a conservative revolution in 2012.

Be prepared America for 8 years of losing your jobs to minorities who only get them because of their race since the GOP now supports affirmative action.

The republican party needs to move closer to center, they came off as bible thumping maniacs in the 2008 election.

True. And doing so if they might even push the Dems further to the left, which again helps the GOP cause.

this is why Obama won

not because i have much faith in him or his party, but because I refuse to vote for the anti-science, anti-progress, pro church state party

I'm a big believer in progression. Last year, McCain and Palin were completely against progress, and the Republican party itself has become anti-progress. I've got many conservative viewpoints (which is why I consider myself a moderate since I've got just as many liberal viewpoints) but I just can't support a party who's so vehemently anti-progress. That's my new word.

Michael Steele is a very intelligent man... and will be a great representative of the Republican party... people are figuring out pretty fast what BO and the democrats are about...the buzz is wearing off.       2010 and 2012 can't come fast enough...

I'm typically conservative when it comes to the death penalty and gun control specifically...but the backwardness of the party is just so ridiculous right now. Not to mention I can't STAND the view on stem cell research.

Nader vs. Obama 2012 lez do it

And who's the racist?  You're judging him before you even know him.  Steele has been a proponent for conservatism since I heard about him when he was Lt. Governor of Maryland.

It was a good choice.  He has alot of work to do to turn the Republican party around.

So since he could speak good he's qualified for the job? Poor logic.

He is stating that the guy has some good things to say and comes across as being very intelligent.   BTW he is black.  Get it?

I meant that just because he's a good speaker or has nice ideas that he deserves the job. Experience is important.

He was only picked because Obama is black and the GOP doesn't want to look racist.

You are the one stringing this black thing along.  You are making a big guess as to why they chose him.  You really should take into account everything the decision makers were looking at in their decision.  Without being in their shoes you really can't infer their motivations at all can you?  That would be akin to assuming you know everything about them and not taking into account their backgrounds and cicumstances.

Michael Steele is a smart man and a great boost to the Republican party... i've listened to his thoughts and ideas for quite awhile and he delivers...
haven't really thought about his skin color... just that he's a talented man that can do good things for our great country... kinda like Barack and giving him a chance... until either one screws up...  treat them both like people
